The regional constituency of Styria North is a regional constituency in Austria that is formed in the case of elections to the National Council for the assignment of mandates in the first preliminary investigation . The constituency includes the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district . In the last National Council election in 2008 , 86,252 people were eligible to vote in the regional constituency of Styria North, with the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) emerging as the strongest party with 43.5%. In 2008, only the SPÖ achieved one of the three basic mandates in the constituency.

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four constituencies were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, with the constituency of Upper Styria (constituency 23) existing for what is now the regional constituency, but there are also numerous other areas included. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally divided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation procedure was introduced, with the Bruck an der Mur and Mürzzuschlag districts being merged to form the constituency of Styria North (constituency 6F). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned three mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) did not lead to any changes.

Since the founding of the regional constituency, the SPÖ has obtained a majority of votes in every election, with an absolute majority in four out of six elections. The SPÖ achieved its best result in the National Council election in 1995, when it achieved 55.0% of the vote. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) alternately took second place in the regional constituency . The ÖVP achieved its best result in 2002 with 30.7%, the FPÖ in 1999 with 25.6%. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) achieved around five percent of the votes in the regional constituency of Styria North and, with one exception, always took fourth place until 2006. In 2008, however, they were overtaken by Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ), which reached 9.7%.
