The Styrian regional constituency is a regional constituency in Austria that is formed in the case of elections to the National Council for the award of mandates in the second preliminary investigation . The constituency includes the federal state of Styria .

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , a total of four electoral districts were created for the Styrian area with the 1918 election regulations for the election of the constituent national assembly. These were the constituencies of Graz and the surrounding area (constituency 20), Central and Lower Styria (WK 21), East Styria (WK 22) and Upper Styria (WK 23). With the reorganization of the constituencies after the final loss of areas such as South Bohemia and South Tyrol, some of the constituencies received new numbers. However, Styria was not affected by this measure. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. In 1971, with the National Council electoral code of 1971, a far-reaching reform of the constituencies was finally carried out, with which the number of constituencies in Austria was reduced to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally divided into 43 regional constituencies and a third preliminary investigation was introduced, with the regional constituency of Styria (constituency 6) being divided into the nine regional constituencies of Graz (6A), Central Styria (6B), for the first investigation . Steiermark Süd (6C), Steiermark Süd-Ost (6D), Steiermark Ost (6E), Steiermark Nord (6F), Steiermark Nord-West (6G) and Steiermark West (6H). In contrast to the state electoral districts of Styria, the number of electoral districts in national elections is twice as high as in state elections. The regional constituency of Styria subsequently received 29 mandates in 1993, whereby the recalculation of the distribution of mandates between the federal states in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) led to the loss of a mandate for the regional constituency of Styria.
