In addition to the ÖVP, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) was the only party to receive one of the five basic mandates to be awarded. With the 2013 National Council election , the Graz regional constituency was replaced by the Graz and environs regional constituency .

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four electoral districts were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, whereby the electoral district of Graz and the surrounding area (constituency 20) was formed for the area of today's regional constituency (constituency 20) City of Graz also included the judicial district of Graz Umgebung . After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally subdivided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation was introduced, with Graz becoming the constituency of Graz (constituency 6A). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned five seats, although the recalculation of the distribution of seats in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) did not lead to any changes. In the course of the amalgamation of districts in the state of Styria, the regional constituencies in the state of Styria were reorganized on January 1, 2013. Thus, the regional constituency Graz with was District Graz- out of the regional constituency Styria center for regional constituency Graz merged.

After the regional constituency was founded, three different parties achieved a majority in the city of Graz. In the National Council elections in 1994 and 1995, the SPÖ emerged as the party with the highest number of votes, and in 1995 it achieved its best result to date with 35.0%. In the 1999 National Council election, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) took first place with 29.8%, which was also its best result to date. The ÖVP has been able to achieve first place since 2002, with the best result in 2002 with 40.6%. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) have been in third place in Graz since 2002, although in 2008 they were just behind the ÖVP and the SPÖ with 19.0%. The Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ) also scored 12.0% in the last election in 2008. In Graz, the Liberal Forum (LIF) also achieved good results, with the LIF achieving 9.6% when it first appeared in 1994.
