history
After Burgenland only came to Austria in 1921, the Burgenlanders first took part in a National Council election in 1923. With the National Council electoral code of 1923, the constituency of Burgenland (constituency 25) was created, which encompassed the entire state. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austrofascist government in 1934, the original allocation of constituencies was reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. The constituency of Burgenland was not affected by the following changes to the National Council electoral regulations, with the National Council electoral regulation in 1971, which reduced the number of constituencies to nine, only the number of the Burgenland constituency changed (now constituency 1). The regional constituency of Burgenland South, however, only came into being when the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, which divided Austria into 43 regional constituencies. The constituency of Burgenland South was subsequently assigned 4 seats in 1993; after the 2001 census, the number of seats in 2002 was reduced to three due to changes in population.
