The regional constituency of Vienna North (constituency 9G) is a regional constituency in Austria that is formed in the case of elections to the National Council for the assignment of mandates in the first preliminary investigation . The constituency includes the two Viennese districts 21 ( Floridsdorf ) and 22 ( Donaustadt ). In the 2017 National Council election , 232,205 people were eligible to vote in the Vienna North regional constituency, with the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) emerging as the strongest party with 34.5%. In addition to the SPÖ, which achieved two basic mandates, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) each won one of the six basic mandates.

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , seven electoral districts were created for the area of Vienna with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, whereby the district of Vienna Northeast (constituency 4) existed for the area of today's regional constituency . In addition to the Floridsdorf district, which is now part of the Vienna North regional constituency, this also included the Brigittenau and Leopoldstadt districts (today the Vienna Inner-East regional constituency ). Parts of the later Donaustadt district were still outside Vienna at that time and were part of the district of Viertel unterm Manhartsberg (constituency 11). After Vienna gained its independence from Lower Austria in the early 1920s and areas such as South Tyrol and South Bohemia were finally ceded by Austria to the successor states, the constituencies were reorganized in 1923. However, this reorganization did not affect the existing constituencies of Vienna or the constituency district under Manhartsberg . After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of the constituencies after the Second World War was largely reintroduced with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945, although the borders of the constituencies were aligned with the changed borders of Vienna . As a result, the parts of the Donaustadt district created in 1954 now also become part of the Vienna Northeast constituency. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Vienna (now constituency 9). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally subdivided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation procedure was introduced, with the Floridsdorf and Donaustadt districts being combined to form the Vienna North regional constituency (constituency 9G). In 1993, the regional constituency was assigned five mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) led to an increase in the direct mandate to six.

Since the creation of the constituency, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) has succeeded in becoming the party with the strongest vote in every election. In the 2002 National Council elections, it achieved its best result to date with 52.5%. In addition to 2002, the SPÖ was also able to win an absolute majority in 1995. The SPÖ suffered its worst result in the last election in 2008 with 40.5%. Second place in the regional constituency went to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) in five out of six elections , with the FPÖ celebrating its greatest electoral success in 1999 with 27.0%. After the FPÖ crashed to 8.1% in the subsequent election in 2002, it was able to increase again to 26.0% by 2008. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) only came second in 2002 when it overtook the FPÖ with 26.3%. In 2008 the ÖVP suffered its worst result with 11.3%. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) mostly took fourth place, whereby in 2002 they became the third strongest party once the FPÖ crashed. The Greens got around 10 to 11% in the last three elections.
