history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four electoral districts were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, although the electoral district of Central and Lower Styria (constituency 21) existed for the area of today's regional constituency covered numerous other areas. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally subdivided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation procedure was introduced, whereby the districts of Deutschlandsberg and Leibnitz were merged to form the constituency of Styria South (constituency 6C). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned three mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) did not lead to any changes. In the course of the amalgamation of districts in the state of Styria, the regional constituencies in the state of Styria were reorganized on January 1, 2013. As a result, the regional constituency of Styria South was merged with the Voitsberg district from the regional constituency of Steiermark Mitte to form the regional constituency of West Styria .

Since the establishment of the regional constituency, the SPÖ has obtained a relative majority in four out of six elections. In 1995 she achieved her best result to date with 38.0%. Only in 2002 and 2006 was the ÖVP able to overtake the SPÖ. In the National Council election in 2002, with 49.4%, it was able to achieve the best result ever achieved by a party in the constituency. In the National Council election in 2008 it slipped back behind the SPÖ with its worst result of 28.9%. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has always been in third place since the regional constituency was founded, with its best result in 1999 (30.4%) just behind the SPÖ and ÖVP. After slipping below the 10% mark in 2002 and 2006, the FPÖ was able to achieve 16.6% again in 2008. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) achieved around four to five percent of the votes in the regional constituency of Styria South and were overtaken in 2008 by Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ), which achieved 15.1%.
