The regional constituency of Styria West (constituency 6H) is a regional constituency in Austria that is formed in the case of elections to the National Council for the assignment of mandates in the first preliminary investigation . The constituency includes the districts of Murau and Murtal . In the last National Council election in 2008 , 86,648 people were eligible to vote in the regional constituency of Styria North, whereby the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) emerged as the strongest party with 34.8%. In 2008, none of the candidate parties in the constituency won one of the three basic mandates to be awarded.

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four constituencies were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, with the constituency of Upper Styria (constituency 23) existing for what is now the regional constituency, but there are also numerous other areas included. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally divided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation procedure was introduced, with the Judenburg , Knittelfeld and Murau districts merging to form the Styria West constituency (constituency 6H). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned three mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (according to the results of the 2001 census) did not lead to any mandate changes in the regional constituency of Styria West. After the merging of the Judenburg and Knittelfeld districts to form the Murtal district, the regional constituency consists only of the Murtal and Murau districts.

Since the founding of the regional constituency, the SPÖ has gained a majority of votes in every election, and in 2002 it achieved its all-time high with 46.9%. With one exception, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) took second place in the regional constituency and achieved its best result with 36.6%. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) almost always came third in the national elections in the regional constituency of Styria West, but in 1999 it managed to overtake the ÖVP with 28.7%. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) mostly achieved around five percent of the votes in the regional constituency of Styria West and, with one exception, always took fourth place until 2006. In 2008 they were overtaken by the Alliance Future Austria (BZÖ), which achieved 15.5% or the best result in a regional constituency of Styria.
