In 2008, only the ÖVP achieved one of the three basic mandates in the constituency. history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four electoral districts were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, although the area of today's regional constituency was the constituency of Central and Lower Styria (constituency 21) covered numerous other areas. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally subdivided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigative procedure was introduced, with the districts of Feldbach, Fürstenfeld and Radkersburg merging to form the constituency of Steiermark Süd-Ost (constituency 6D). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned three mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) did not lead to any changes. In the course of the amalgamation of districts in the state of Styria, the regional constituencies in the state of Styria were reorganized on January 1, 2013. As a result, the regional constituency of Styria South-East was merged with the regional constituency of Styria East to form the regional constituency of East Styria .

Since the establishment of the regional constituency, the ÖVP has achieved a majority of votes in every election, and in 2002 and 2006 it also achieved an absolute majority. The ÖVP set its best mark in 2002 with a share of the vote of 62.2%. With one exception, the SPÖ was always able to achieve second place in the South-East regional constituency. After it had achieved its best result to date with 25.8% in 1995, it was overtaken in 1999 by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which this year achieved its highest share of the vote with 31.1%. After the FPÖ suffered heavy losses as a result, the SPÖ was able to regain its 2nd place. With the exception of 1999, the FPÖ always came third. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) always took fourth place up to and including the 2006 National Council election, where they usually got a share of around 4 to 5% of the vote. In 2008, however, they were overtaken by Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ), which in 2008 gained 13.5% in the regional constituency of Styria East.
