The regional constituency of Steiermark Ost is a regional constituency in Austria that is formed in the case of elections to the National Council for the award of mandates in the first preliminary investigation . Until 2012, the constituency comprised the Hartberg and Weiz districts . In the last National Council election in 2008 , 126,303 people were eligible to vote in the regional constituency of Styria East, whereby the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) emerged as the strongest party with 34.5%. In 2008, only the ÖVP achieved one of the four basic mandates in the constituency.

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four electoral districts were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, with the constituency of Oststeirer (constituency 22) existing for the area of today's regional constituency, which also included other areas . After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally divided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation procedure was introduced, whereby the Hartberg and Weiz districts were merged to form the Styria East constituency (constituency 6E). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned three mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (based on the results of the 2001 census) did not lead to any changes.

Since the founding of the regional constituency, the ÖVP obtained a relative majority of votes in every election. In the National Council election, the People's Party not only achieved its best result in the constituency with 56.0%, it also achieved an absolute majority. Despite the fact that the ÖVP subsequently slipped to a share of 34.5% of the votes by 2008, their first place was always safe. With one exception, the SPÖ always came in second place, with the result of the National Council election in 1995 being the best result with 31.6%. In the subsequent election, the SPÖ was narrowly beaten by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which received 28.2% of the vote in this election. With the exception of the 1999 National Council election, the FPÖ was always in third place, although after slipping in 2002 and 2006, it was able to achieve 18.0% again in the 2008 National Council election. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) always took fourth place up to and including the 2006 National Council election, where they usually had a share of the vote of 5 to 6%. In 2008, however, they were overtaken by Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ), which in 2008 achieved 12.6% in the regional constituency of Styria East.
