The regional constituency of Styria North-West (constituency 6G) is a regional constituency in Austria that is formed in the case of elections to the National Council for the award of mandates in the first preliminary investigation . The constituency includes the Leoben and Liezen districts . In the last National Council election in 2008 , 118,237 people were eligible to vote in the regional constituency of Styria North, whereby the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) emerged as the strongest party with 38.2%. In 2008, only the SPÖ achieved one of the three basic mandates in the constituency.

history

After the end of the state of Austria-Hungary , four constituencies were created for the area of Styria with the electoral code of 1918 for the election of the constituent national assembly, with the constituency of Upper Styria (constituency 23) existing for what is now the regional constituency, but there are also numerous other areas included. After the electoral code of 1923 was overruled by the Austro-Fascist government in 1934, the original division of constituencies was largely reintroduced after the Second World War with the constitutional law of October 19, 1945. With the National Council electoral code in 1971, there was a far-reaching reform of the constituencies, which reduced the number of constituencies in Austria to just nine. As a result, there was only one constituency for the federal state of Styria, the constituency of Styria (constituency 6). When the National Council electoral code came into force in 1992, the Austrian federal territory was finally divided into 43 regional constituencies and a third investigation procedure was introduced, with the districts of Leoben and Liezen merging to form the constituency of Styria North (constituency 6G). In 1993 the regional constituency was assigned four mandates, whereby the recalculation of the mandate distribution in 2002 (according to the results of the 2001 census) led to a reduction of the basic mandates to three mandates in the regional constituency of Styria North-West.

Since the founding of the regional constituency, the SPÖ has gained a majority of votes in every election, with its best result of 48.4% in the 1995 National Council election. Second place in the regional constituency was initially occupied alternately by the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), with the ÖVP always coming second in the last three elections. The ÖVP achieved its best result in 2002 with 36.6%. The FPÖ was able to advance to second place in the 1994 and 1999 elections, reaching its highest level of 28.4% in 1999. The Greens - The Green Alternative (GRÜNE) achieved around five percent of the votes in the regional constituency of Styria North-West and, with one exception, always took fourth place until 2006. In 2008 they were overtaken by Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ), which achieved 11.7%.
