action

Employee Fred Hill returns home from a frustrating day at work to see his little wife, Emily. But the daily monotony of a cozy home, steak and kidney pudding and an undemanding wife is not enough for Fred. Unexpectedly, his uncle gives him a larger sum so that Fred can fulfill his dream of traveling in luxury. The couple embark on a trip around the world, which will take them first to Paris, then through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal to the Far East. But already while crossing the English Channel , Fred was struck by seasickness . Meanwhile, the lonely Emily meets the urbane Colonel Gordon on board the luxury liner; The two fall in love and Fred, who has finally recovered, falls under the charm of a supposedly noble beauty on board. When Gordon explains to Emily that the “princess” is a deceitful adventurer, the already divorced woman pityingly reflects on her affection for her wife. Gordon gives up Emily generously, Fred his "princess" rather by force - after she has run away with a thousand pounds in the port of destination Singapore . The reunited couple only have the bare essentials to start their journey home with a cheap liner. But the delicate flame of their newly awakened love threatens to drown together with the two of them in the event of a disaster in the China Sea . Fortunately, the castaways are rescued from the sinking ship by Chinese looters. Happy and satisfied to finally be home again, Fred now wants to be modest with a cozy home, steak and kidney pudding - but Emily, who is now ambitious because of her experiences, insists on raising her standard of living quickly.

background

  • We're rich at last has distinct autobiographical traits. The journey of the two protagonists Fred and Emily and the trials they both have to endure find their equivalent in the marriage of Alfred and Alma Hitchcock. Hitchcock was inspired by a boat trip that he took with his wife and their daughter Patricia , who was born in 1928 , and by a short vacation in Paris. Alma also wrote the script. There is also a certain resemblance of names between Emily and Alma on the one hand and between Fred and Alfred on the other.
  • Hitchcock's then producer, John Maxwell, was not thrilled with the idea of We're Rich at Last . He forced Hitchcock to do film number seventeen beforehand , in which he could develop little interest. We're finally rich was a financial failure. From today's perspective, the film appears comparatively modern. In comparison with Hitchcock's previous works, it is relatively poor in dialogue. In addition, he is strongly influenced by Hitchcock's humor and wit, which can be found in many of his later films and on the one hand reveals human weaknesses with a wink, on the other hand it can also be macabre and morbid. Hitchcock's creative and experimental use of the camera, which is typical of his early films, is also striking.
  • The title Rich and Strange is a quote from William Shakespeare's The Tempest .
  • The field shoots took place in Marseille , Port Said , Colombo and Suez .
  • The film was shown on German television for the first time on April 27, 1979 at 8:15 p.m. on ARD .
