Robert F. Young

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Franklin Young (born on 8. June 1915 in Silver Creek , New York , died on 22. June 1986 ) was an American science fiction - writers .

Life

Young was the son of postal worker Franklin B. Young and Edna Young, née Baker. Apart from three and a half years of service as a soldier in World War II , during which he was stationed in the Solomon Islands , the Philippines and Japan , Young lived in New York State where he owned an estate on Lake Erie . After working in various professions, including a metal caster and machinist, he eventually became a full-time writer.

Young's first publications appeared in Startling Stories , Playboy , The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s from 1953 . Over the next three decades, Young wrote around 200 short stories in a poetic-romantic style that brought him comparisons with Ray Bradbury and Theodore Sturgeon . Several of them were published in France by Galaxie , Fiction and as anthologies in the Livre de Poche . In Italy it was mainly to be read in the Urania magazine. He was also popular in Japan, where 40 of his stories were published in translation. About 20 of his stories have been translated into German, including two from his short story series about the space whale hunter John Starfinder. It was only in his final years that Young's novels appeared in English. A first novel was published in 1975 only in French translation.

His best-known short story The Dandelion Girl (1964, German as Das Mädchen mit dem Löwenzahnhaar ) was nominated for the Hugo Award in the category Best Short Story in 1965. The short stories Clay Suburb and What Bleak Land were nominated for the Locus Award in 1976 and 1988, respectively.

Young had been married to Regina M. Sadusky since 1941 and had a daughter with her. Young died in 1986 at the age of 71.
