Robert John McClory (born October 10, 1963 in Detroit ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Gary .

Life

Robert John McClory first studied at Oakland University , where he earned a bachelor's degree in political and communication science in 1985 . In 1987, he earned a Masters in Public Administration and Economic Development from Columbia University , New York City . He received his doctorate in law from the University of Michigan in 1991 . He then worked in a law firm until 1994 and then entered the seminary . In 1995 he went to Rome as a seminarian at the Pontifical North America College and studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was ordained deacon on October 8, 1998 in St. Peter's Basilica by Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka . On May 22 of the following year he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Detroit in Detroit Cathedral through Archbishop Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida .

After further studies, he obtained a licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in 2000 . After his return, he was secretary to Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida from 2002 to 2003 and then chancellor of the diocesan curia until 2009 , in addition to various tasks in pastoral care . From 2009 to 2018 he was Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Detroit. From 2001 until his appointment as bishop he was a judge at the metropolitan court and since 2002 he has taught canon law at the Detroit seminary. From 2011 to 2017, he was an observer for Region VI of the United States Bishops' Conference , which includes the states of Ohio and Michigan . He was a member of the College of Consultors of the Archdiocese of Detroit and was Rector of the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak from 2017 to 2019 .

On November 26, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Gary. He was ordained episcopal on February 11 of the following year by the Archbishop of Indianapolis , Charles Coleman Thompson . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Detroit, Allen Vigneron , and the Bishop Emeritus of Gary, Dale Joseph Melczek .
