Robert Morin Shoemaker (born February 18, 1924 in Almont , Michigan , † June 21, 2017 in Harker Heights , Texas ) was an American general in the US Army who, among other things, was the commander of the FORSCOM ( US Army Forces Command ) was.

Life

Shoemaker, son of Uriah Beebe Shoemaker and his wife Pomala Morin Shoemaker, began after school attendance at the US Military Academy in West Point , which he completed in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science (BS). After his promotion to lieutenant and later Lieutenant he was platoon leader and after promotion to captain company commander and battalion staff officer in units of the 1st Infantry Division ( 1st Infantry Division ) , the 82nd Airborne Division ( 82nd Airborne Division ) and the 2nd Infantry Division ( 2nd Infantry Division ) . In 1959 he completed his training at Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in Fort Leavenworth and then completed pilot training for Army Aviation Branch (US Army Aviation Branch) , which he finished in 1960. Then he was an officer for the infantry in the army's assignment department.

1962 Shoemaker was a member of the committee for tactical mobility requirements (Tactical Mobility Requirements Board) , which was named after its chairman and father of the American Army Aviation General Hamilton H. Howze also Howze Board . In this role, he was involved in the development of numerous principles for air raid operations and, at the beginning of the Vietnam War, took a trip to investigate the capabilities of the US Army Aviation Branch. After his return he was G 3 staff officer of the Fort Benning stationed 11th Air Assault Division ( 11th Air Assault Division ) , which was reorganized in July 1965 in 1st Cavalry Division ( 1st Cavalry Division ) . In the following years he was first commander of the 1st Battalion of the 12th Cavalry Regiment and in December 1965, as Colonel, he was in command of the 1st Squadron of the 9th Cavalry Regiment. For his services there he was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross . After completing his training at the US Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle in 1967 , he became Chief of Staff and, in 1969, as Brigadier General, Deputy Commander of the 1st Cavalry Division deployed in the Vietnam War .

After the end of the Vietnam War broke Major General Shoemaker Major General James C. Smith as commander of the 1st Cavalry Division ( 1st Cavalry Division ) , and remained at that post until February 1975, after Major General Julius W. Becton, Jr. began his successor. He himself then took over as Lieutenant General between 1975 and 1977 as Commanding General of III. US Corps ( III Corps ) in Fort Hood and was then deputy commander of the US Army Forces Command from 1977 to 1978. In 1978 Shoemaker was promoted to general and served from 1978 until his retirement in 1982 as the commander of the FORSCOM ( US Army Forces Command ) at Fort McPherson . He was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his services in this service . In 1983 he was inducted into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame . He was also the Bell County Commissioner from 1987 to 1994 .

Shoemaker was married to Mary Alice Tuke Rickard since July 17, 1948.
