Rodrigo , full name Rodrigo Moreno Machado (born March 6, 1991 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian - Spanish football player . The striker is currently under contract with Leeds United .

Career

Rodrigo, who was born in Rio de Janeiro as the son of the Brazilian professional soccer player Adalberto Machado , moved to Vigo, Spain , at the age of twelve . There he played in the youth team of Nigrán CF before he was accepted into the youth department of Celta Vigo in summer 2004 . After performing well, he drew the attention of Real Madrid , who eventually signed him in 2009. Initially planned for the youth team, Rodrigo soon played in the club's C-men's team. Soon after, he played for Real Madrid Castilla for the first time and scored his first goals there. His qualities and achievements were not hidden from other European teams and so Rodrigo moved to Portugal to Benfica Lisbon on July 31, 2010 . Real retained the right of first refusal on the player for the next two years. In Lisbon, the striker signed a five-year contract, but was loaned to English first division side Bolton Wanderers for the first season .

For the 2014/15 season, Rodrigo initially moved to Valencia CF on loan . For the 2015/16 season he was finally committed and given a contract until June 30, 2019.

For the season 2020/21 returned Rodrigo in the Premier League back and joined the newly promoted Leeds United , with whom he signed a contract until June 30, 2024th

National team

Spanish youth national teams

In 2010 Rodrigo was in the squad of the Spanish U19s at the European Football Championship in France. The team advanced to the final of the competition, where they then lost 2-1 to France. During the entire tournament, the attacker had two hits. He brought his team 1-0 lead in the final before the French could strike back. A year later he took part with Spain in the U-20 World Cup in Colombia. His team failed in the quarter-finals on penalties against Brazil, and he himself scored three goals in four games. In the summer of 2012 he took part with the Spanish selection at the Olympic Games in London , but his team was surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary round. In June 2013, Rodrigo won the U-21 European Championship with the Iberians .

A national team of Spain

Rodrigo made his debut for the Spanish senior team on October 12, 2014 in the European Championship qualifier against Luxembourg in Luxembourg City . For the time being, it was his only game and at the 2016 European Championship finals in France he was not part of the Spanish squad. On October 6, 2017, he made his second appearance in a 3-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against Albania in Alicante and scored his first international goal with the 1-0 goal. After successfully qualifying for the final tournament in Russia in 2018 , he played three games in preparation and was also part of the Iberian squad. The Spaniards were surprisingly eliminated in the round of 16 against hosts Russia on penalties, with Rodrigo coming on in three games.

Leeds United secured his services at the end of August 2020 for the club's record sum of around 33.5 million euros. Before that, the record was around 18 million euros which were paid for Rio Ferdinand .
