Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (born February 27, 1936 in Hollywood , California ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles .

Life

Roger Michael Mahony received a religious education at home and at school. He studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Mission Hills and Camarillo seminaries before receiving the sacrament of ordination on May 1, 1962 . After a year as a pastor in Fresno , his local bishop commissioned him to undertake postgraduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC

From 1964 he worked again as a priest in Fresno, was also director of social services and charities of his home diocese and lectured at the State University of Fresno . During this time he began to get involved with socially marginalized groups, especially the Spanish-speaking people. In 1967 he was awarded the title of Honorary Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) in recognition of his many services to minorities . From 1970 to 1975 he worked as Cancellarius Curiae in the diocese leadership of Fresno.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 7, 1975 titular bishop of Tamascani and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Fresno . He received his episcopal ordination on March 19 of that year by the Bishop of Fresno, Hugh Aloysius Donohoe . Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops William Robert Johnson from Los Angeles and John Stephen Cummins from Sacramento .

On 15 February 1980 Pope appointed him John Paul II. The bishop of Stockton ; the inauguration took place on April 17th of the same year. He was named Archbishop of Los Angeles on July 12, 1985 and inducted into office on September 5. During his tenure he began to transform the administrative structures of the archdiocese.

On June 28, 1991, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Quattro Coronati in the college of cardinals . After the Pope's death, he attended the 2005 conclave .

In the course of abuse allegations against priests of his diocese, Mahony is suspected of having covered up cases of sexual abuse and hindering the investigation by police officers. In the Oscar- nominated documentary Deliver Us from Evil , Oliver O'Grady , a pedophile former priest of his diocese who spent seven years behind bars for child abuse, accuses him of O'Grady's pedophilia, but transfers him to a job having to deal with children again. In another case, Mahony is accused of protecting a priest who has since been sentenced to ten years in prison for child abuse.

On March 1, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. Cardinal Mahony took after the resignation of Benedict XVI. participated in the 2013 conclave that elected Francis Pope.

On March 13, 2013, lawyers for victims' families announced that victim families and the Catholic Church had reached an agreement: the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Cardinal Mahony and a former priest paid a total of $ 10 million; in return, the allegations will not be pursued further. The case concerned the abuse of four children.
