Roman Hryhorowytsch Kuptschynskyj ( Ukrainian Роман Григорович Купчинський ; born September 24, 1894 in Roshadiv , Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , Austria-Hungary ; † June 10, 1976 in Ossining , Westchester County , New York , United States ), was a Ukrainian poet Journalist, composer and critic.

Life

Roman Kuptschynskyj was born into a priestly family in the village of Roshadiv, in the west of today's Sboriw Raion of the Ukrainian Oblast of Ternopil . His family moved with him in 1896 to the village of Kadlubyske ( Кадлубиське ) in the Brody district . He attended grammar school from 1911 and graduated from high school in Przemyśl district in 1913 . He then studied until 1914 at the Greek Catholic theological seminary in Lemberg . There he was also active in sports and was among other things the athletics champion of Galicia. Together with many of his classmates, he volunteered for the Ukrainian Legion at the beginning of the First World War . There he was involved in the organization of culture and education as well as the publication of leaflets and magazines. From 1915 on, he was, among other things, Levko Lepkyj ( Левко Сильвестрович Лепкий ; 1888-1971), Antin Lotozkyj ( Антін Львович Лотоцький ; 1881-1949) and Stepan Tscharnezkyj ( Степан Миколайович Чарнецький ; 1881-1944) editor of the Press Department of the Ukrainian Legion . His first poem was published in 1915 in the Viennese magazine The Herald of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine . By 1918 he rose to the rank of Porutschik in the military to regiment adjudicator and composed and wrote numerous songs. In 1919 he became a soldier of the Ukrainian Galician Army of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic and as such was interned in Tuchola in July 1920 as a prisoner of war with the troops of the Second Polish Republic .

After his release from Polish captivity in February 1921, he studied philosophy at the University of Vienna from 1921 to 1922 and at the Secret Ukrainian University ( Таємний український університет ) in Lviv from 1922 to 1924 . There he founded, together with former comrades and artists, including Pavlo Kowschun ( Павло Максимович Ковжун ; 1896-1939) the artist group of non- symbolists Mytussa ( Митуса ), and was an editorial member of the newspaper of the same name. He was also a co-founder and from 1921 to 1939 editor of the Lviv publishing cooperative Червона калина Tscherwona kalyna . From 1924 to 1939 he was the editor of the newspaper Діло Dilo and from 1933 to 1939 he was the chairman of the Society of Writers and Journalists I. Franko in Lviv. During the Second World War he lived in Krakow and worked in a Ukrainian publishing house. At the end of the war he emigrated to Munich ( West Germany ) and from there to the United States in 1949. In New York he headed the "Responses of the Day" column for the Svoboda newspaper, and in 1952 he was co-organizer and from 1958 to 1960 chairman of the Union of Ukrainian Journalists of America . He died at the age of 81 after a long illness in Ossining near New York and was buried in St. Andrew's Cemetery in South Bound Brook , New Jersey .
