Career

Romano Mombelli attended the special class for sport and culture at the Solothurn Cantonal School . His first success in extreme swimming was swimming through the Strait of Gibraltar on April 5, 2014.

On September 5, 2015, he swam across Lake Brienz from Bönigen to Brienz in record time in 3 hours and 18 minutes.

On the night of October 12, 2015 to October 13, 2015, he tried to swim the Kaiwi Channel in Hawaii. Shortly after take-off, however, he was stung by several Portuguese galleys and had to give up the attempt after symptoms of paralysis. The project was captured by Swiss radio and television in a documentary for the Summer Challenge format .

The Strait of Bonifacio swam Romano Mombelli on 7 November 2015 a world record time of 3 hours and 40 minutes.

In July 2016, he became the first swimmer in history to cross Lake Murten , Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel within three days . He then followed the course of the Aare from Biel to Solothurn while swimming . Romano Mombelli covered a total distance of 105 km within four days.

Romano Mombelli completed the pioneering project Sarganserland in July 2017. He swam through Lake Walen , Linth Canal , Obersee and Lake Zurich within four days . Mombelli covered the total distance of 73 km in 18 hours and 44 minutes.

In July 2018, the swimmer tackled another pioneering project: in icy water temperatures between 11 and 16 ° C, he crossed six Graubünden mountain lakes within four days. Mostly without a wetsuit. In the first stage he completed a four-fold lengthwise crossing of the Marmorerastaues . For safety reasons, the man from Solothurn wore a wetsuit to cross the reservoir lengthways. After the Marmorerasee , the double longitudinal crossing of the 5 km long Lake Sils followed in 2 hours and 19 minutes. On the third stage, he crossed the Silvaplana twice. After Lake Silvaplana, Mombelli completed the Grischun project with more lakes than originally planned: in addition to Lake St. Moritz , he also crossed the Lej suot da Silvaplauna and the Lej da Champfèr . He covered a total of 37 km.

On October 4th, 2019 Romano Mombelli started the crossing of the English Channel from Samphire Hoe ( Dover ) to Calais . The strait between England and France is around 21 miles (33.8 km) wide. The swimmer had to stop the attempt after more than 5 hours due to physical problems.

On July 18, 2019, Mombelli crossed the 21-25 km route between the island of Fehmarn (Germany) and Rødby (Denmark) in 5 hours 24 minutes and 11 seconds. According to the organizers, this is the fourth fastest time in the history of marathon swimming on Fehmarn. The Belt Crossing is one of the toughest long-distance swims in the world. The start took place on Thursday morning at 4:04 a.m. After just over an hour, the swimmer suffered a setback as he got caught in a field full of fire jellyfish, which burned his entire face. This was followed by further jellyfish fields as far as Rødby.

On Friday, August 23, 2019, Romano Mombelli and Andrea Gisiger successfully crossed the English Channel . The team, Jura & Trois-Lacs, covered the distance between Samphire Hoe (England) and Cap Gris-Nez (France) in 11 hours and 48 minutes. The guidelines of the Channel Swimming Association state that the swimmers must take turns every hour. In addition to the water temperature, the coordinates and the arm stroke frequency, this cycle is strictly controlled by an observer and logged every hour. Jura & Trois-Lacs are the third Swiss team that ever made it through this channel.

On Saturday, August 31, 2019, Romano Mombelli won the first Swiss OpenWater Cup.

He has been trained by the international swimming coach Dirk Henry-Richard Lange since February 2016 .

Romano Mombelli is a student of German and history at the University of Bern and lives in Solothurn .
