The McDonald's Children's Aid Foundation builds and operates "Ronald McDonald Houses" and "Ronald McDonald Oases" and is related to the McDonald’s fast food chain . The foundation looks after families of seriously ill children and works for them. The foundation was founded in 1987 as Ronald McDonald Children's Aid and was given its current name in 1997. The McDonald's Children's Aid Foundation is a subsidiary of the US Foundation Ronald McDonald House Charities . It cooperates closely with McDonald's in Germany and also serves the parent company as an advertising medium.

The first chairwoman of the supervisory board was the SPD politician and former Bundestag President Annemarie Renger . Her successor was Rita Süssmuth in 1997 .

Ronald McDonald houses

Ronald McDonald Houses are the facilities of the McDonald's Children's Aid Foundation named after the McDonald's mascot, Ronald McDonald . They serve to accommodate families of seriously ill children during hospital treatment in the immediate vicinity of their sick child and thus to reduce the emotional burden for everyone. Ronald McDonald houses are located in the vicinity of large children's hospitals, which are of national importance. There are 22 such houses in Germany. As a rule, the McDonald's franchisees working in the respective region support “their” local houses and are involved in their maintenance.

The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania, USA in 1974 . In Germany, the first Ronald McDonald House opened in the city of Kiel . There are currently houses in Aachen , Bad Oeynhausen , Berlin-Buch , Berlin-Wedding , Cottbus , Erlangen , Essen - the Hundertwasser House in Grugapark , Hamburg-Eppendorf , Hamburg-Altona , Homburg , Jena , Kiel, Cologne , Leipzig , Lübeck , Mainz , Munich-Großhadern , Munich at the German Heart Center , Oldenburg (Oldb.) , Passau and Sankt Augustin . The newest stores were opened in Sankt Augustin, Tübingen , Hamburg-Altona and Passau. Since it was founded in 1987, the foundation has invested over 110 million euros in projects for seriously ill children in Germany. Since 1974, the parent organization has invested over $ 440 million in social projects worldwide.

Ronald McDonald oases

“Ronald McDonald Oases” are places of retreat directly in the clinic, to which children and their relatives can withdraw while the children are in outpatient treatment. There are five such Ronald McDonald oases across Germany. They are located in Sankt Augustin , Erlangen , Cologne, Hamburg-Altona and Passau.

Switzerland

In Switzerland there is one house each in Basel , Bellinzona , Bern , Lucerne , St. Gallen and two in Geneva .

  • In the USA, the film Comic Stars Against Drugs was produced under the auspices of the American McDonald's Children's Aid .
  • A Ronald McDonald House was opened in Giessen as early as 1986 . After the collaboration with McDonalds was ended, the house was continued as a family center for children with cancer.
