After the Vancouver Canucks had selected him in the fourth round in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft in 70th place, Stern signed his first professional contract before the 1987/88 season . The Canucks used the right winger mostly in both the farm team and the NHL squad in the following four years , but he was never able to earn a regular place. After knee surgery that resulted in him missing the entire 1997/98 season, he joined the San Jose Sharks as a free agent in August 1998 . There he had signed a two-year contract.
After the contract expired, Stern officially ended his career in September 2000 at the age of 33.
