Career

Stern first played for three years from 1984 to 1987 with the Chevaliers de Longueuil in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In addition to numerous penalty minutes, the Canadian was also able to set accents on the offensive and accumulated 759 penalty minutes and 163 points in 193 games in the LHJMQ by the start of his professional career.

After the Vancouver Canucks had selected him in the fourth round in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft in 70th place, Stern signed his first professional contract before the 1987/88 season . The Canucks used the right winger mostly in both the farm team and the NHL squad in the following four years , but he was never able to earn a regular place. During the 1990/91 season , the Canucks gave him in a three-player transfer deal to the Calgary Flames , where star finally got a regular seat. He stayed with the Flames until the end of the 1996/97 season and played his best NHL year in the 1993/94 season with 29 points in 71 games. After knee surgery that resulted in him missing the entire 1997/98 season, he joined the San Jose Sharks as a free agent in August 1998 . There he had signed a two-year contract.

After the contract expired, Stern officially ended his career in September 2000 at the age of 33.
