Rudolf I (Würzburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf I († August 3, 908 in Thuringia ) was Bishop of Würzburg from 892 to 908 . As the son of Count Udo, he came from the Konradin family .

Rudolf was the younger brother of Konrad the Elder and the later Duke of Lorraine Gebhard and thus one of the few relatives of the Emperor Arnulf and his son Ludwig the child whom the Emperor preferred in his fight against the Frankish Babenbergs (see Babenberg feud ) and who played the dominant role in the empire after his death.

After the fall of the Babenberg Margrave Poppo of Thuringia , Konrad the Elder was his successor, while Rudolf was appointed Bishop of Würzburg, with which the two brothers represented the dominant power in Thuringia and Main Franconia. They were the backbone of his government, next to the old family power base in Hessen , and later with Gebhard in Lorraine (as a welcome compensation for the Liudolfinger lost Thuringia) and thus for Conrad's son Conrad the Younger, who 911 as Conrad I as successor Ludwig was elected as the German king.

Rudolf fell on August 3, 908 in Thuringia in the fight against the Hungarians .
