Johann Rudolph Christoph Wilhelm Freiherr Hiller von Gaertringen (born November 3, 1771 in Hergisdorf , † July 28, 1831 in Landsberg an der Warthe ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

His parents were the later major general Johann Eberhard Rudolf Hiller von Gaertringen (1735–1799) and his wife Juliane Dorothea, née von Hagen (1745–1786).

Military career

Hiller von Gaertringen received his education at the school in Magdeburg and the high school in Bielefeld . In 1784 he came as a corporal in the infantry regiment "von Stwolinsky" of the Prussian army . On May 1, 1786, he was promoted to the "von Württemberg" cuirassier regiment as a standard junker, and on May 18, 1790, he was promoted to the cornet . On August 5, 1792 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and took part in the battle near Gniezno during the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . Hiller von Gaertringen rose to Rittmeister by October 29, 1805 . During the Fourth Coalition War he was made inactive with the surrender of General Rudolf Ernst von Bila at Anklam.

After the war he was transferred to Regenwalde in 1809 as a stage commandant . In 1811 he came to Woldenberg in the same position and was promoted to major in the cavalry on September 9, 1811. On October 27, 1812 he became a district brigadier of the gendarmerie in Neumark in Landsberg an der Warthe. In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he became commander of the 3rd Pomeranian Landwehr Cavalry Regiment on June 1, 1813. On August 1, 1813, he came to the 2nd Kurmark Landwehr Cavalry Regiment as a commander. During the war he fought in the battles near Jühnsdorf, Blankenfelde, Jüterbog, Seyda, Zahna, Dessau and the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Belle Alliance and the siege of Torgau and the blockade of Magdeburg. Hiller von Gaertringen was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class for Dennewitz, and the First Class Cross for Belle Alliance. At Waterloo he suffered a wound that hindered him for the rest of his life. From December 1813 to May 31, 1814 he served as a brigade leader in the IV Army Corps .

On May 31, 1815 Hiller von Gaertringen was promoted to lieutenant colonel with a patent from July 3, 1815 and as such was appointed commander of the 1st Dragoons Regiment on January 5, 1816 . On December 21, 1816 he received the Russian Order of St. Anne II Class. On March 31, 1818, with a patent from April 17, 1818, Colonel . On March 31, 1826 he received the service cross and on September 2, 1829 the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class. Due to his health, Hiller received his departure from Gaertringen on November 15, 1827 as major general with an annual pension of 1750 thalers .

He married Ulrike Hermine Philippine von Heising on July 16, 1800 in Dramburg (* April 3, 1778; † February 21, 1849), a daughter of Lieutenant General von Heising . The couple had several children:
