Vegetative characteristics

The lozenge species are evergreen shrubs or half-shrubs . They are rich in essential oils and therefore smell intense and strong.

The alternate leaves are arranged one to three pinnate. The leaflets are oblong obovate and have translucent points.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in terminal clusters or paniculate inflorescences . The flowers have a double flower envelope , the terminal flowers are five-fold, the lateral four-fold. The sepals are fused at their base. The yellowish petals are entire, toothed or ciliate. Eight or ten stamens are formed. The discus is large and deep, four or five lobes. The four or five carpels form an upper ovary .

The four- to five-horned capsule fruits are spherical or flattened-spherical with a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters and contain several seeds. The black seeds are 2 to 2.5 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Ruta was established in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum , 1, p. 383. The genus Ruta belongs to the subfamily Rutoideae within the family of the Rutaceae (Rutaceae).

The distribution area extends from the Canary Islands across the Mediterranean to western Asia .
