The Ruta 27 (short 27-CH ) is an international trunk road in the Región de Antofagasta in the great north of Chile . In its course it is completely asphalted for 156.1 km. It connects San Pedro de Atacama , where the customs control is located, with the Paso de Jama , the border pass to Argentina . Even if this pass with an altitude of 4200 m gives the road its name, it reaches its apex at a mountain pass on a mountain saddle (S23 ° 4.3518 W67 ° 30.2856) 57.6 kilometers by road before the Paso de Jama at an altitude of 4831 m, which makes it one of the highest paved highways in South America. It mostly runs in the Altiplano and leads past volcanoes such as B. the Purico complex and the Licancabur , the Quepiaco wetland (km 78), as well as salt lakes and part of the nature reserve Los Flamencos .

Exposure

The trunk road runs over a long stretch of completely devoid of vegetation and is very exposed to very strong sunlight with low air temperature, strong winds and thin air. The crossed region is extremely sparsely populated between customs control and the border and there is no refueling facility. It belongs to San Pedro with a population density of one adult on 4 km², most of whom live in this city and its suburbs. San Pedro has an area of 23,439 km² and thus has a larger area than the German state of Hesse with around 5300 inhabitants . It is expressly indicated on a sign that the 27-CH is outside the cellular network at a distance of around 120 kilometers by road to the Paso di Jama.

Corredor Bioceánico Eje del Capricornio

Together with Rutas 25 , 23 and 5 Panamericana , it belongs to the Corredor Bioceánico Eje del Capricornio , which leads to Antofagasta . The official function of this Ruta was ratified in 2000 by Decree Nº 2136 by the MOP .
