The Ruta 8, Brigadier General Juan Antonio Lavalleja , is a trunk road in Uruguay .
It is one of the most important roads in the country with a total length of 457 kilometers. Its name can be traced back to the former president of Uruguay, Juan Antonio Lavalleja .
It runs from the Montevidean district of Punta de Rieles - Bella Italia in a north-easterly direction to the Cerro Largo department in the border town of Aceguá . There it is transferred to the BR-153 on Brazilian territory. On its way to there it leads through the three departmental capitals Minas , Treinta y Tres , where it crosses the Río Olimar , and Melo , where it crosses the Ruta 26 .
The road is only developed as a motorway for the first 25 kilometers up to the vicinity of Pando . It then leads north as a simple but well signposted road in good condition and with a wide shoulder. The road surface consists of a kind of concrete base up to the city of Minas. Then the route is paved to its end point.
