São Joaquim , officially Portuguese Município de São Joaquim , is a city in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil . The city was estimated to have a population of 26,763 as of July 1, 2018. The city is known for the frequent snowfall and the nearby São Joaquim National Park .

geography

São Joaquim (at a latitude of 28 ° 17'38 "south and a longitude of 49 ° 55'54" west) is 1360 meters above sea level and is one of the highest cities in the country. The year-round mild climate and the cold winter according to Brazilian standards (but not strictly related to certain temperate species) allow apple cultivation as in other similar climates. Promotion of the National Festival of Apple, fruit that does not adapt easily in most regions of Brazil . EPAGRI, the state's agricultural agency, has an experimental station where the cultivation of Fuji , brought from Curitibanos by Fumio Hiragami, is perfected in this location. The plants come from Japan .

Its population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. The parish covers 1,892.26 km². From 1989 to 2017 it was part of the Campos de Lages microregion, which in turn was part of the Serrana mesoregion of Santa Catarina. Since 2017 it has been part of the newly created geostatistical Região geográfica imediata Lages .

climate

The climate is a subtropical highland climate , but always humid during the year ( Köppen : Cfb ), which in turn can be interpreted as a true temperate oceanic climate , as can be found in Plymouth and the rest of the English Southeast with many similarities. Temperatures are mild year round, with no apparent differences between the highest and lowest values ​​of temperature variation between the seasons. The lowest temperature found is −9 ° C (July 14, 2000), "very cold" by Brazilian standards, although it is not yet extreme. The 1961 edition for 10 o'clock has a temperature of about −7 ° C. The summer is clearly cool even for a city with such an altitude, the absolute maximum being 31.4 ° C (December 20, 1971). There were six temperature records of over 30 ° C. Snow occurs almost every year, albeit of low intensity, except in rare cases such as 1957, largest snowfall in Santa Catarina and the second largest in the country with 1.3m of snow and a week's blockade of access to the city.

Studies show the increase in precipitation frequency with the warm phase of the Pacific Decade Oscillation (PDO) and its decrease during the El Niño and La Niña episodes . If the altitude were higher or a few degrees further south, it would likely endure more even and cumulative snowfall. Rainfall is well distributed throughout the year, in contrast to Campos do Jordão for example, which has a defined dry season with no precisely defined peaks as expected. Frost can even occur in midsummer and averages 40.8 days per year, when the freezing of soil and plants between 1980 and 2003 is registered by the local meteorological station. The city has an average of 2.7 days of snow a year, making it the most snow-reliable urban area in Brazil, apart from the higher rural areas. Such a situation where most of the Brazilian communities never got snow, or in rare cases, the city is often visited as winter tourism for people who want to watch the snowfall, which at another moment usually falls at the most favorable times in the middle of the year .
