The Südstadt is a district of Grevenbroich in the Rhine district of Neuss . The district emerged from the Erftwerkiedlung , which was built between Allrath and Grevenbroich since 1919 .

History until 1945

The beginnings of Südstadt are closely linked to the history of Erftwerk AG .

On September 1, 1916, the Giulini brothers signed a contract with RWE and the German Reich in Ludwigshafen am Rhein to build a production facility for aluminum on a brick factory in Grevenbroich's Allrath district . The new plant was to be built between the Kölner Landstrasse and the Mönchengladbach-Cologne railway line. The production facility was to include a furnace hall, a converter, a foundry and an electrode factory and should operate as Erftwerk AG .

Herkenbusch estate was purchased in 1917 in order to organize the construction of the plant and the construction of housing for the employees. The plant was able to go into operation at the end of 1917 and then reached full capacity the following year, in September 1918. With the end of World War I , production also ended.

With the construction of 31 single-family houses and 36 rental apartments between 1919 and 1921, the Erftwerkiedlung was built on the green meadow . The houses and apartments are located on Wöhlerstrasse , Von-der-Porten-Strasse and Gustav-Lück-Strasse . In 1940 the number of houses had grown to 136 private homes and the Erftwerkiedlung had around 1,200 inhabitants. In addition to Gustav-Lück-Strasse , construction was now mainly carried out in Erftwerkstrasse and along Neuenhausener Strasse . The construction activity was only interrupted with the beginning of the war . The Erftwerkiedlung was the target of bombing raids on May 29, 1943. With the occupation of Grevenbroich by Allied troops on February 28, 1945, production in the Erftwerk came to a complete standstill, whereupon all employees had to be laid off. At that time, around 300 people lived in the Erftwerkiedlung.

History after 1945

St. Joseph of the East (2008)

Since 1953 there has been more construction in the southern part of the city and the district has been greatly expanded in the east and south. The Erftwerkiedlung Catholic elementary school was inaugurated on November 4, 1954 . The Südstadt quickly grew to around 2,500 inhabitants. In 1963, four high-rise buildings were added, popularly known as the 4 Apostles . The expansion of the district ended in the late 1970s, when the new construction areas came up against the motorway and the expressways that border the district today. Vacant lots are currently (2007) being closed in Südstadt.

There are many dead ends in the southern part of the city. This peculiarity of the place is intended by city planning. The attempt was made to minimize the noise pollution from through traffic as much as possible. The workers at the nearby aluminum plant should be able to sleep as peacefully as possible.
