Südwest is a German advice publisher based in Munich . It was founded in Marbach am Neckar in 1949 and is now part of the Random House publishing group .

history

In 1949 Matthias Lackas founded Perlen-Verlag with headquarters in Marbach am Neckar. Lackas was previously active in the publishing industry. After the Second World War he was involved in, among other things, Saar-Verlag , which he had to leave when it was integrated into West-Ost-Verlag. Perlen-Verlag had start-up capital of 50,000 German marks , which came from a printing company owner. The first books were published in 1950. It was primarily about "light" literature and classics that were intended to appeal to a wide audience. Perlen-Verlag had commercial success in 1956 with “The Book of Etiquette” by Karlheinz Graudenz. It was a behavior guide . In addition to the Perlen-Verlag, Lackas also ran the “Community of Book Friends” with the “Books for Everyone” program. Lackas sold the company to Bertelsmann Lesering in 1956 and benefited over the next few years from the collaboration with Bertelsmann , especially as the licensor of individual titles.

In 1958 the company relocated to Munich. The sales company initially stayed in Marbach am Neckar and only later moved to the Bavarian capital. In 1963 Lackas changed the name from Perlen-Verlag to Südwest-Verlag. In the same year the company was converted into a limited partnership and sold to Hans Neumann Verlag. In 1966 J. Ebner Graphische Betriebe KG , based in Ulm, joined the publishing house as a limited partner and gradually acquired 100% of the shares until 1969. The new owner came under the umbrella of Süddeutscher Verlag in the early 1970s . This in turn merged into the List / Südwest publishing group, which was acquired in 1992 by Christian Strasser and Heinrich Hugendubel. It was the foundation stone for the Goethestrasse publishing group. After the merger with Econ Verlag , Axel Springer acquired the majority in the company in 1998. Further acquisitions by the parent company meant that Südwest-Verlag finally became part of the Ullstein Heyne List publishing group.

In 2003 Bertelsmann announced that it would buy the company. Due to antitrust concerns, only part of the publishing group was allowed to keep, which included Heyne and Südwest. Today the publisher is part of the Random House publishing group. Ulrich Genzler has been responsible for publishing since 2014 .

One of the first titles published by Südwest-Verlag was “The Beauty Guide of the Well-Groomed Woman” from 1950. In the following decade, works by Dominique Le Bourg (“If the men knew”), Franz Bleis (“The art of loving”), Herbert Andreas Löhlein ("Star Cicerone of Love"), Douglas William Jerrold ("Madame Kaudels Curtain Sermons") and Peter Pretz ("Auto-Brevier") added to the portfolio. In the 1960s and 70s, many titles reached a circulation of over 250,000 copies, such as the Wilhelm Busch Volksausgabe or Oswalt Kolle's educational books . Other important authors from Südwest were Otto Koch , Lutz Mackensen , Heinrich Pleticha , Harry Valérien , Heinz Winkler , Eckart Witzigmann and Christian Zentner until the 1990s .
