The Traisental expressway S34 is a planned expressway in Lower Austria . It should run from St. Pölten in the direction of Wilhelmsburg to enable an efficient connection of the upper Traisental to the state capital and to relieve the Mariazeller Straße B20.

Following the S34, the B334 Traisental Straße (Wilhelmsburg bypass) to Traisen is planned.

Route variants

Two possible routes were planned for the S34.

The east route, known since the beginning of the planning, was to lead from the existing St. Pölten junction as an extension of the Krems expressway S33 via Brunn bei Pyhra and the Traisen to Wörth bei St. Georgen and from there to the junction north of Wilhelmsburg .

At the beginning of September 2007, the west route was presented as a further variant. This begins west of St. Pölten on Wiener Straße B1 and leads over a new junction with the A1 at Schwadorf and west past St. Georgen and Völtendorf to Wilhelmsburg.

In May 2008 the decision to implement the west route was announced. This offers advantages in flood and noise protection and affects fewer residents, but does not allow a direct connection from the S33 to the S34.

Project goals

  • Improvement of the accessibility of the Lower Austrian central area and the provincial capital St. Pölten as well as the A1 in the direction of Vienna or Linz from the south
  • Improvement of the traffic load along the B20 (Mariazeller Straße)
  • Increasing traffic safety and reducing the frequency of accidents (a high accident frequency can be observed on the B20 due to the high traffic density)

Project status

A wide variety of variants and routes for a high-quality road in the Traisental have been developed since 1974. A preliminary project is currently being drawn up by ASFINAG, which will be submitted to the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology for approval after completion .

Subsequently, the submission project, the environmental impact assessment and the basic redemption must be carried out.

In November 2010 it was announced that for the time being only the clasp from the B1 (St. Pölten-West) to the B39 ( Völtendorf ), including a connecting clasp from Völtendorf to the B20 ( Spratzern ), will be built. The planned start of construction was in 2014, the planned completion in 2016.

In July 2014 this schedule was updated. The first construction phase, from the B1 / junction St.Pölten / Hafing to the planned L5181 / junction Hart, is to be built from 2017 [obsolete] −2019 [obsolete] . The second section, from Hart to the Wilhelmsburg Nord junction, is to be Template: future / in 2 yearsimplemented between 2020 and 2022 . The start of construction has been delayed by at least one year until 2020 due to objections from citizens' initiatives. The start of construction is now planned for 2020, and completion is planned for 2024 at the earliest.

criticism

In the course of finding the route, the municipality of Wilhelmsburg commissioned a statement from traffic expert Hermann Knoflacher , civil engineer for construction, which resulted in the following conclusion:

“The B334 was incorporated into the law at the time, without the necessary planning factual basis for it having obviously existed. The presented project of the B334, which envisages the section from the A1 to just before Wilhelmsburg, can therefore be justified neither in terms of traffic nor economics. It contradicts the currently valid national and international legal requirements and regulations. The contradictions to the Alpine Convention , the Lower Austrian Regional Planning Act, the constitutional provision, economical use of funds and stock corporation law (since ASFINAG is supposed to cover the costs) are glaring and - as the analyzes have shown - cannot be dispelled with the present state of knowledge, but are backed up by the facts. A realization under these conditions therefore does not seem possible in a constitutional state in which the passed laws are factually based, interpreted and implemented. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the most important point in terms of traffic planning and traffic engineering in the course of the B20, the section in the area of the Wilhelmsburg community, is not only not resolved, but - if this project were to be implemented - will also be massively deteriorated. "
