GeoStar
The GeoStar is a satellite bus for small and medium-sized communications satellites from the American Orbital Sciences Corporation .
On the basis of this design, Orbital manufactures various payloads for the end customer that are tailored to the respective requirements. It is compatible with various launch systems and can, for example, be launched with the Atlas V , Ariane 5 , Falcon 9 and Proton launch vehicles . The STAR-1 was used for the first time at IndoStar 1 in November 1997 and has been used since then in the improved STAR-2 version. In 2011 the satellite bus was renamed GeoStar . The first satellite to be launched under this name is SES-8 . A total of 3 satellites were launched under the name GeoStar-3 . For a fully electrified version there is the GeoStar-2e, for which 2 more satellites have currently been ordered.
Technical specifications
The basic structure of the three-axis stabilized satellites has a size of 1.75 m × 1.7 m × 1.8 m and consists of aluminum alloys and composite materials . The curb weight is 558 kg each. The energy supply of the satellite and its payload is provided by gallium arsenide - solar cell surfaces that generate up to 5 kW of power (in the later version up to 7.5 kW), two 4.84 kWh lithium-ion batteries and a 24–36 V DC bus system guaranteed. A hydrazine engine is used as the drive in orbit . A MIL-STD-1750A processor with a MIL-STD-1553 B bus system takes over control . For position control are earth and sun sensors and optional star sensors used.
