The STOXX Europe 50 is a share index made up of 50 large, listed European companies. It is considered to be one of the leading stock market barometers in Europe. It must be distinguished from the Euro Stoxx 50 , which only contains companies in the euro area .

calculation

Both a price index ( ISIN EU0009658160) and a performance index (ISIN EU0009658178) are calculated. The convention is that STOXX Europe 50 is understood to be the price index in which dividends are not taken into account, without the addition of a name . This is different from the German DAX share index , which is usually referred to as the performance index .

The index composition is reviewed annually in September. The selection criterion is the market capitalization in relation to the free float . The weighting of the individual values is capped at 10 percent. The calculation will be made during the STOXX-Ltd. -Trading time updated every second from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm CET .

history

Historical overview

STOXX Europe 50 Index 1986–2012

The stock index was launched on February 26, 1998 under the name Dow Jones STOXX 50 . The index base is 1,000.00 points on December 31, 1991. A backward calculation was carried out until 1986. On March 1, 2010, the name was changed to STOXX Europe 50 in order to reflect the new ownership structure. In December 2009, Deutsche Börse and the SIX Group acquired the stake in STOXX Ltd. that was previously held by Dow Jones & Company . Since then, the index has been operated by STOXX Ltd. in Zurich.

Milestones in the development of the STOXX 50 were January 3, 1990, when the index closed above the 1,000 point mark for the first time, and February 5, 1997, when it ended trading above the 2,000 point mark for the first time. In the following years the index marked further record levels. On February 26, 1998, the STOXX 50 closed above the 3,000 point mark for the first time and on November 9, 1999 for the first time above the 4,000 point mark. The share index ended trading for the first time on March 2, 2000 above the 5,000 point mark.

On May 2, 2000, the STOXX 50 marked an all-time high with a closing level of 5,183.24 points. After the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ) burst , the index fell to a low of 1,909.05 points by March 12, 2003. That was a decrease of 63.2 percent since March 2000. March 12, 2003 means the end of the downward slide. From spring 2003 the STOXX 50 began to rise again. By July 16, 2007, the share index rose to a closing level of 3,998.93 points.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in summer 2007, the STOXX 50 began to decline again. On March 17, 2008 the index closed again below the 3,000 point mark and on November 20, 2008 below the 2,000 point mark. The STOXX 50 hit a new low on March 9, 2009, when it ended trading at 1,614.75 points. Since July 16, 2007 this corresponds to a decrease of 69.6 percent. March 9, 2009 marks the turning point of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the index was on the way up again. By February 17, 2011, it rose by 71.5 percent to a closing level of 2,768.65 points.

The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the index. On September 22, 2011, the STOXX Europe 50 closed trading at 2,028.03 points. The loss since February 17, 2011 is 26.8 percent. The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 9, 2013, the index closed at 2,659.71 points, 31.2 percent higher than on September 22, 2011.
