The Saga was a ferry of the Swedish shipping company Svenska Lloyd put into service in 1966, which was in service between Gothenburg and Kingston upon Hull until 1972 . In its subsequent career the ship was named Stena Atlantica ( Stena Line ), Finnpartner ( Finnlines ), Olau Finn ( Olau Line ) and Folkliner in use for various owners on the North and Baltic Seas. In 1984 it was sold to the Mediterranean, where the ferry was named Festos , Captain Zaman I and, most recently, Sancak I during its service life . A fire in April 2003 ended the career of the Sancak I , which was then scrapped in Turkey .
history
The saga was created under construction number 1093 in Gothenburg's Lindholmens Varv and was launched on October 18, 1966. The delivery to Svenska Lloyd took place on May 2, 1966. The cost of the ship was 32 million Swedish kronor. On May 6th, the ferry was put into service on the route from Gothenburg to Kingston upon Hull.
In November 1971, the saga became the property of Stena Line. The price for this was around 33 million Swedish kronor, more than the construction of the ship. In February 1972 the takeover took place under the new name Stena Atlantica and subsequent renovation work in the passenger departments. On March 15, 1972, the ferry began service between Gothenburg and Kiel . In the meantime, the ship also called at Korsør and Copenhagen instead .
In April 1973, the Stena Atlantica became Finnpartner in the possession of Finnlines. From then on, their service route was between Helsinki , Nynäshamn and Travemünde . In addition, the ship was occasionally used for cruises in the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. From December 1975 the ferry was launched .
Olau Line became the new owner in March 1976. After being renamed Olau Finn , the ship began service between Sheerness and Vlissingen in May 1976 . The service time of the ferry under the Olau Line was overshadowed by negative reports, which spoke of the poor condition of the ship, poor hygiene and inadequate care for the crew.
In May 1982 Olau Finn was acquired by Finska Postbanken . As a Folkliner , she was from then on under the management of the Folkline between Kaskinen and Gävle . However, this proved to be short-lived as the Folkline filed for bankruptcy in August 1984. The operation was maintained until September before the Folkliner was launched again.
In October 1984 the Greek Minoan Lines bought the ship and renamed it Festos . After renovation work, it was put into service on the route from Piraeus to Heraklion in 1985 . In September 1987 and October 1990 the ferry was temporarily canceled due to machine damage, otherwise its service on this route was uneventful. In 1992, Ancona became the new port of departure for the Festos , which initially continued to call at Heraklion and, from 1993, Çeşme as the destination port. From 1997 the ship was briefly in use between Venice , Corfu , Igoumenitsa and Patras .
In February 1998 the Festos went to the Turkish Ferro Feribot ve Roro Tasimaciligi. From then on, the ship operated between Brindisi and Igoumenitsa as Captain Zaman I and under the management of TEM-Diler Lines . In addition, the ferry was chartered out. Between June and September 2000 she was in use for the Moroccan shipping company Comanav between Nador and Sète .
The last owner of the now 35-year-old ship was in June 2001, also Turkish Sancak Line. As Sancak I , the ferry operated the line from Brindisi to Çeşme. During modernization work in a shipyard in Tuzla (Istanbul) for summer operation, a fire broke out on board the ship on April 16, 2003, which could only be extinguished after three days. The Sancak I was written off as a total write-off and sold for demolition in Aliağa , Turkey , where scrapping began in July 2003.
