Town twinning

War events

During the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871, a battle between the 16th Corps of the French 2nd Army of the Loire under Vice-Admiral Jean Bernard Jauréguiberry and the Prussian troops took place here on January 15, 1871 . General von Schmidt commanded the Duke of Brunswick's fusilier (body) battalion to Sainte-Suzanne to take this place.

A monument by the architect Georget was inaugurated here on October 24, 1897, to commemorate the battle at Saint-Jean-sur-Erve. It is dedicated to the soldiers who opposed enemy troops. Around 6,000 French soldiers had formed a defensive front in the area of the village and thus delayed the advance of the enemy army.

In addition, there are two communal graves in the top municipal cemetery, in which the bodies of 18 French and 10 German soldiers were buried, who were killed in the fighting for the city on January 15, 1871. The obelisk is decorated with sculptures by M. Chaumont and in 1920 was also given a plaque on the base on which the names of the 44 inhabitants of the city who lost their lives for France in the First World War are engraved . The honorable inauguration took place on July 18, 1920. The obelisk is around 4 m high and has a pyramid-shaped base as a base.

chapel

The Perrine Dugué chapel

The Chapelle de Perrine Dugué was built in 1797 near the spot where the young Republican farmer Perrine Dugué was murdered. He was born in Thorigné-en-Charnie in 1777 and was slain by three Chouans on March 22, 1796 in Saint-Jean-sur-Erve . He was venerated as the “Sainte tricolore”, the “Sainte républicaine”, “La Sainte bleue” or “La Sainte aux ailes tricolores” as a kind of saint. The chapel was ascribed healing powers shortly after his death. The chapel is a little to the west on the road to Sainte-Suzanne. It is made of sand-lime brick and consists only of a rectangular room with a slate roof. The main entrance is on the western gable. There is also a side door in the south wall and two semicircular windows to illuminate the altar.
