Salvatore Farina (born November 18, 1957 in Gallipoli , Apulia ) has been Chief of Staff of the Italian Army since the end of February 2018 . Among other things, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum .

Military career

Farina completed officer training at the Military Academy in Modena from 1976 to 1978 and then until 1980 the officer training school in Turin . Until 1989 he served as platoon leader and company commander in the telecommunications force , first in the 33rd Battalion for Electronic Warfare of the V Corps and then in the 7th Telecommunications Company of the IV Mountain Corps . From 1989 to 1990 he worked for the Landsouth NATO command in Verona . He then completed two general staff courses in Civitavecchia and at Staff College Camberley until 1992 . He then stayed until 1994 as an exchange officer with the staff of the British 3rd Mechanized Division in England . After a brief assignment with the staff of the "Ariete" tank brigade in Pordenone , he completed the general staff course at the General Staff Academy of the Italian Armed Forces in Rome .

From 1995 to 1996 Farina commanded the telecommunications battalion "Leonessa" in Civitavecchia, with which he took part in a peace mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina ( IFOR ). From 1996 to 1999 he headed the Operations Center of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. This center was then merged into the new operational command (COI) . During this time he planned and supervised deployments of Italian military contingents in Bosnia, Albania , Macedonia , Kosovo and East Timor . He then commanded the 1st Telecommunications Regiment in Milan until 2001 and prepared it for its tasks as the telecommunications association of the new NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy . From 2001 to 2004 Farina headed the planning department of the Army General Staff and was particularly involved in the preparations for the conversion to a professional and volunteer army . Then he was Italian military attaché in London until 2007 .

From 2007 to 2008 Farina was the commander of a telecommunications brigade in Anzio . After that he was first deputy head and then head of the planning department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces until 2013. During this time he also chaired a governing body of the European Defense Agency . From September 2013 to September 2014 Farina was at the head of KFOR in Kosovo. He then headed the Army Development Department of the Army General Staff until May 2015 . In May 2015 he took over the management of a committee for the implementation of the new Italian Defense White Paper . On March 4, 2016, Farina took over the JFC Brunssum as lieutenant general (four stars) from the German general Hans-Lothar Domröse . On February 21, 2018, he gave up this post to General Riccardo Marchiò and on the following February 27, he became Chief of the Army General Staff in Rome.

Farina holds degrees from the Universities of Turin (Strategic Studies, Cooperation with the Officers' College ), Padua ( Electrical Engineering ) and Trieste ( International Relations ) as well as Monterey, California (Defense Resources Management) and Rome (Link Campus; Ministry of Defense executives). Farina is married and has two daughters.
