The Galaxy Nexus ( GT-I9250, code name “Maguro”), unofficially also Nexus Prime , is a smartphone that was presented to the public on October 19, 2011 by Google and Samsung in Hong Kong with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system . It is the first smartphone with Android version 4.0 and thus the flagship device of this version. The device was built by Samsung . It is the third device in the Nexus series and the successor to the Nexus S , which was also produced by Samsung. Unlike the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus was marketed under the “Samsung” brand and thus joined the Samsung Galaxy series . The device was available from the beginning of December 2011 until around 2013. The successor was the Nexus 4 , which was developed in a cooperation between Google and LG and was mainly distributed via Google Play .
Furnishing
The Galaxy Nexus is 135.5 × 67.9 × 8.9 mm in size and weighs 135 grams. The housing is made of plastic and has a scratch-resistant glass-coated front. Contrary to what was previously assumed, it does not have an aluminum frame. A 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex A9 dual core processor works in the Galaxy Nexus, but it is clocked at only 1.2 GHz. It supports current cellular standards and can be networked via W-LAN , Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth . The rear camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, the front one with 1.3.
The smartphone was originally delivered with Android version 4.0 ( Ice Cream Sandwich , ICS ). The multi-touch capable contour display with curved glass in AMOLED technology has a diagonal of 11.8 cm (4.65 inches ) and a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. The GSM variant has 16 GB of flash memory; An LTE version with an optional 32 GB was only sold in the USA . An introduction of the 32 GB version on the European and Asian markets, as previously announced by Samsung, was canceled on February 16, 2012.
software
The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone with Android 4. As with Android 3 ( Honeycomb ), the hardware navigation keys (back, home, menu, search) were omitted in this operating system version; instead, Back , Home and Multitasking are shown by the operating system on the main screen.
The Android phone has, among other things, a function for unlocking the device via face recognition ( Face Unlock ) and Android Beam for sending small pieces of content via the NFC chip. Since Android 4, the built-in browser has been able to navigate the Internet in private mode. In addition, improvements have been made to the Google Mail, Gallery and Calendar app as well as to various widgets . In addition, the surface can be customized from Android 4 onwards, so you can group the applications on the home screen in folders.
At the Google I / O in June 2012 Android 4.1 ( "Jelly Bean") was presented. Participants in the conference received a. a Galaxy Nexus on which the current version was already preinstalled. At the same time, Google made this software available free of charge for existing devices.
In October 2012, Android 4.2 (still “Jelly Bean”) was presented in a blog entry. This version can be installed on most Galaxy Nexus devices as an " over-the-air update ". After a first bug-fixed 4.2 version (4.2.1 in November 2012), "Jelly Bean" version 4.2.2 has been available since February 2013.
At the end of July 2013, the Android version 4.3 for the Galaxy Nexus was presented. This fundamentally improved version is made available via the Google server both via over-the-air update and as a file to be installed ("factory image") (JWR66Y).
At the end of October 2013 it was announced that Google would not release Android version 4.4 for the device. Third party developers, e.g. B. LineageOS now offer updates to Android version 7.1.2.
