The Catholic parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Bassano del Grappa is a late Baroque transverse church .

history

In 1308 Jacobino del Blasi founded an asylum for the poor on the site of today's church, which had a chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament , documented since 1397 . In the 15th century the chapel was expanded into a church and variously redesigned. From 1713 to 1715 the original sacrament chapel was rebuilt. A renovation project begun in 1747 came to a standstill shortly after it had begun, until construction work resumed under the direction of Giovanni Miazzi in 1782 and was completed a few years later.

description

Exterior construction

The monumental main facade of the church extends over the whole side of the Piazza Libertà . The defining element is the risalit , which is in front of the church as an early classical temple front. The high triangular gable above the main portal with a tooth-cut frieze rests on Tuscan columns . The facade has no windows, but with rococo - cartridges provided, indicating the window. A medallion above the main portal bears the inscription D - O - M IN HONOREM BATTISTAE . The side axes of the main facade take up the formal language of the main neighborhood and each have a smaller risalit with portal. The entablature and triangular pediment are crowned with statues . Behind the façade, the corpus of the nave with the characteristic rounded corners is visible from the piazza . The sacrament chapel with an octagonal dome and the former campanile , which has since been incorporated into the building complex, are not visible from the piazza.

inner space

The high altar is located in the sacrament chapel on the eastern narrow side of the church. In this respect, the chapel can be understood as a choir , which means that the sacred space could be understood as a longitudinal church . The pews in the ship, however, according to the facade transversely to the band with the Pietà -Altar and the side thereof attached pulpit aligned. Thus, the house of God forms a rare example of a Catholic transverse church .

While the high altar in the sacrament chapel is held in a splendid, playful baroque style, the central Pietà altar and the five side altars show the strictness of form of early classicism. This also applies to the room structure, which is done by simple Ionic pilasters and simple entablature with a tooth-cut frieze. The ceiling is shaped by stitch caps and straps . The ceiling frescoes are attributed to the Venetian Rococo artist Giovanni Scaiario. Giambattista Piazetta designed the altarpiece in the Sacrament Chapel, to which Orazio Marinali added sculptures .
