San Hipólito is a church building in the city of Cordoba , Spain .

history

The church was part of a monastery that was founded by Alfonso XI in 1343 . , King of Castile and Leon , in gratitude for his victory in the battle of the Salado . He furnished the monastery with rich goods and decreed that his father Ferdinand IV , who had died in 1312 and whose grave had been in the Mezquita until then, should be buried in the monastery church . He also wanted to find his final resting place in the church himself.

In 1347 the church was given a papal bull by Clement VI. raised to the rank of collegiate church , so that the deceased rulers could be commemorated here with appropriate solemnity.

Already earlier, the veneration of Alfonso XI. shown for St. Hippolytus , on whose holiday (August 13th) he was born. In 1333, for example, he instructed the clergy in Jerez de la Frontera and Sanlúcar to pray for his ancestors especially on the feast day of this saint.

The construction work on the church dragged on for a long time, so that during Alfonso XI's lifetime. and his son and successor Pedro I, only the apse and crossing were completed. The work was not completed until 1736 - with the support of Philip V.

The work of the 18th century mainly focused on the nave and the facade . In the 18th and 19th centuries, other changes were made that gave the church its current appearance.

In 1852, during the reign of Isabella II , the church lost its status as a collegiate church, but remained open for worship. At the end of the 19th century the church was handed over to the Jesuit order , who are still active here today. During a restoration in 1994, an attempt was made to reconstruct the exterior form of the 18th century.

The complex includes the church, sacristy and cloister . The rectangular, with a triangular pediment winning and pilasters structured main facade was built in 1730th The portal of the church is framed by stone pilasters resting on pedestals and decorated with baroque decorative elements. Above it stands the statue of Hippolytus in a niche, covered with the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Castile-Leon .

Another portal allows access from Avenida del Gran Capitán and initially leads into the cloister. The coat of arms of Philip V can be seen above this portal, which is framed by the Order of the Golden Fleece . In the adjoining cloister, round arches rest on bulbous stone pillars; part of the cloister was converted into closed rooms. The tomb of the historian Ambrosio de Morales from 1620, made of red and black marble, and a modern statue of the founder of the order Ignatius von Loyola are also located here .

In 1773, work on the current tower began under master builder Pedro de Lara . This was originally supposed to consist of four components, of which only the two lower ones were completed. The lower floor, 15 meters high and adorned by small empty frames, is closed at the top by a cornice . The floor above is decorated with smooth pilasters with Tuscan capitals . The bells can be seen between the openings closed at the top by round arches. The conclusion is a frieze with triglyphs and metopes . The church tower is very similar to the tower of the San Miguel Arcángel Church in Villanueva de Córdoba, which was built at the same time .

inner space

The floor plan of the single-nave church is a Latin cross with a nave , transept and polygonal choir closure after two further yokes . The Gothic choir dates from 1350; the vault is supported by ornate ribs resting on services . The windows show various saints of the Jesuit order. Two doors under the windows give access to the sacristy.

The main nave, which consists of four bays and is covered with a barrel vault , was rebuilt in the 18th century. In the side chapels with the balconies above there are a number of Baroque altars.
