The Pueblo Libre district ( pueblo libre Spanish for "free village") is located in the central south of the Huaylas province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district founded on January 2, 1857 has an area of ​​130.99 km². At the 2017 census, there were 6,371 residents in the district. The administrative center is the village of San Juan at an altitude of 2,488  m with 181 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Juan is located in the river valley of the Quebrada Huashca, 7 km south of the provincial capital Caraz .

Geographical location

The Pueblo Libre district has a length in north-south direction of about 20 km and a maximum width of just under 11 km. It is located on the western bank of the Río Santa in the high valley of Callejón de Huaylas and extends in the west to the watershed of the Cordillera Negra .

The Pueblo Libre district is bordered to the west by the Pamparomás district , to the northwest by the Huata district , to the northeast by the Caraz district , to the east by the Yungay and Matacoto districts (both in the Yungay province ) and to the south by the Cascapara and Quillo districts (also both in Yungay Province).
