Trier-Süd is one of the 19 districts of the city of Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate .
geography
The district adjoins the city center immediately to the south . It consists of the former Trier suburbs "Barbeln" (St. Barbara), "Mattheis" (St. Matthias), Löwenbrücken and Medard and is bordered in the west by the Moselle and in the east by the Trier-Saarbrücken / Luxembourg railway line . Trier-Süd has an area of 172.2 hectares.
history
The community of St. Barbara , to which Löwenbrücken also belonged, was incorporated into the city of Trier in 1888. St. Matthias and Medard originally belonged to the municipality of Sankt Matthias-Medard-Feyen , which was incorporated into the city of Trier in 1912.

Local advisory board
A district was formed for the Trier-Süd district . The local council consists of 15 members, the chair of the local council is chaired by the directly elected mayor.
In the local advisory board, the Greens have been the strongest parliamentary group with six seats, ahead of the SPD (5 seats), the CDU (3 seats) and the FDP with one seat.

Mayor
Jutta Föhr (SPD) has been the mayor since January 2008. In the 2019 local elections, Nicole Helbig (Greens) was elected as the new mayor. In a runoff election on June 16, she prevailed against the previous incumbent with a share of the votes of 51.00%, after none of the original four applicants had achieved the necessary majority in the direct election on May 26, 2019.
Culture and sights
The Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias with the grave of the Apostle Matthias is one of the oldest monasteries in the city. Also worth seeing are the Barbarathermen , the remains of a Roman bathing and leisure facility from the 2nd century and the Jewish cemetery on Weidegasse u. a. with the graves of the ancestors of Karl Marx . A particularly beautiful street is Speestrasse with some listed buildings from the Wilhelminian era and the Eberhardstrasse monument zone .

The district is located on the southern access road to the University of Trier , which can be reached quickly by local public transport and has a connection to the main station through the southern station. At the same time, the old town is in the immediate vicinity. Trier-Süd is therefore home to many Trier students. The most important business and traffic route is Saarstrasse .

Personalities

- Reinhold Wirtz (1842–1898) was a German architect , municipal district and diocesan master builder of the Diocese of Trier and according to his plans the parish church Herz Jesu was built between 1893 and 1895 .
- Theo Seifer (1883–1946) was a German entrepreneur, mechanical engineer and geologist who made outstanding contributions to the extraction of oil in Lower Saxony.
- The sculptor family Föhr, Vitus († 1955), Klaus († 1964) and Thomas, who with his wife Renate Diederichs still runs a stone carving workshop on his family's estate .
