The Santa Cruz County is a county in the south of the State of Arizona to the United States . The county seat is Nogales .

The county is located in southern Arizona, borders Mexico to the south , Pima County to the north and Cochise County to the east . It has an area of 3,205 square kilometers and a water surface of one square kilometer.

history

Santa Cruz County was formed on March 15, 1899 from parts of Pima County. It was named after the Santa Cruz River , which was named after the missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino in the late 17th century .

The Tumacacori Museum has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark since May 1987 .

53 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 7, 2020), including the remains of the Los Santos Ángeles de Guevavi and San Cayetano de Calabazas missions and the Tumacacori Museum have National Historic status Landmarks .

Santa Cruz County had a population of 38,381 people as of the 2000 census . There were 11,809 households and 9,506 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.00 percent white, 0.38 percent African American, 0.65 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 19.73 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 80.78 percent of the population.

Of the 11,809 households, 45.6 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.3 percent were married couples living together, 15.4 percent were single mothers, and 19.5 percent were non-families. 16.5 percent were single households and 7.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.23 and the average family size was 3.66 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 33.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,710 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,057. Males had a median income of $ 27,972 versus $ 21,107 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,278. 24.5 percent of the population and 21.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. 29.7 percent of them are under 18 years of age and 23.2 percent are 65 years or older.
