Sason ( Armenian Սասուն Sasun , Kurdish Qabilcewz ) is a district town and a district in Turkey . Both belong to the Batman Province and are located in southeastern Anatolia . The city lies at the foot of the Helkıs Mountain. It houses around 40% of the district's population.
The district is located in the Taurus Mountains . Important mountains are the Malato Tepesi (2973 m) and the Bulak Dağı. The Sason brook flows into the Batman , a tributary of the Tigris . Sason County is the northernmost of Batman Province and borders the Diyarbakır , Bitlis and Muş provinces . In addition to the district town ( Merkez ) there is another city (Yücebağ, 3,507 inhabitants) and 50 villages, of which the most populous ( Umurlu ) has only 834 inhabitants. On average, 319 people inhabit each village.
Until the genocide of the Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century, there were numerous Armenian communities in the valleys of the Sason area in addition to Kurdish villages . Today mostly Arabs , Kurds and Zazas live here . The national epic of Armenia , " David of Sasun ", takes place in the region.
history
According to legend Sanasar, son of gave Assyrian king, the place its name in Armenian in 390 Sanasunk ' and 680 Sasunk' said.
After the battle of Manzikert in the 11th century, the local Byzantine commander, T'ornik, son of Muschegh, son-in-law of Magister Gregorius Arsakides Pahlavouni, appears to have ruled himself independent. After a seal found at Bèken, he acquired the titles Anthypatos and Strategos von Sassun . He opposed the attempt of Philaretos Brachamios to build a united front against the Seljuks and gathered an army against him. He tried to forge an alliance with the Emir Amr Bakr ' but was killed by soldiers from the Emir of Maiyafariquin .
Sason was part of the Sanjak Siirt in Vilâyet Diyarbakır until 1880 and became part of the Vilâyets Bitlis in 1892 . In the years 1894 and 1904 there were Armenian uprisings here , which killed several thousand Armenians and over twenty villages when the Kurds and Turks were suppressed . In 1925 the village of Kabilcevz / Kabilcoz ( Kurdish Qabilcewz ) became the capital of the district.
Sason was part of Muş Province until 1927 and part of Siirt until 1993. With the establishment of the Batman Province in 1990, it was annexed to Batman.
