production

In mid-May 2019, Lionsgate announced a ninth Saw film, which will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman , who previously directed parts two to four. The Jigsaw -Autoren Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger will again be responsible for the screenplay based on a story by comedian Chris Rock is based, who is a big fan of the franchise his own words. Rock therefore approached Lionsgate and was able to convince the studio with its "fantastic vision that expands and re-visualizes the world of the notorious jigsaw killer". Nevertheless, the film should still contain the twists and turns that are typical of the film series, but for the first time also include a humor component. Mark Burg and Oren Koules will serve as producers , while Rock, Daniel J. Heffner , James Wan and Leigh Whannell will serve as executive producers . When filming began, it was confirmed that Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson , Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols will star in the lead roles. While Rock is supposed to play a cop investigating a new "trap murder series", Jackson will play his father, Minghella his partner and Nichols his boss. A little later, Chris Ramsay was cast in a still unknown supporting role and Nazneen Contractor as a coroner.

Filming began in Toronto in early July 2019 under the working title The Organ Donor . Jordan Oram acted as cameraman . On August 28, director Bousman announced that filming had been completed.

On February 5, 2020, the original title Spiral: From The Book of Saw became known through the publication of a trailer and a film poster . In Germany the film is marketed as Saw: Spiral . Originally, the US theatrical release was scheduled for October 23, 2020. In July 2019, this date was brought forward by five months to May 15, 2020 due to the planned cinema release of Halloween Kills . In Germany, Saw: Spiral should hit cinemas the day before. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the German release date was postponed to May 20, 2021 and the US release date in the cinema to the following day. This is the first Saw film that will not open in theaters in October.
