Schauner ( 881  m above sea level ) is a district of the city of Dornbirn in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) , about 3 km as the crow flies from the city center .

According to tradition, this group is the highest and oldest part of Dornbirn. Far back, the parcel only had seven houses. In the 19th century there were seven farms, four of which still exist today. More residential buildings have been added in the last few decades.

Origin of name

The name " Schauner " is derived from a family originally resident there called "Schowinger". The Rotte is mentioned in an Emser case book as early as 1287 and 1431 . The original name of the clearing is said to have been Eisenharz (see first name : Eisenhart / Eisenhardt).

In “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ” this group is listed as an independent hamlet and part of Dornbirn under the name: “ Schauniger ”. In the " Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol und Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ", the Rotte is listed as Schauinger and also as an independent hamlet of Dornbirn .

Topography, geography, location and traffic

The district, about 3 km away from the center of Dornbirn, can only be reached by normal motor vehicles via a steep road via Watzenegg - Schwendebach . A forest and field path that was built in 1884/85 leads via "Badhof", Bad Kehlegg to Kehlegg .

The steep road to Rotte Schauner has in sections the character of a ravine.

Chapel of St. Maria in Schauner in Dornbirn , Oberdorf . Built in 1674.

religion

The Roman Catholic Chapel of St. Maria in Schauner is a listed building which is liturgically cared for by the parish in Oberdorf (Church of St. Sebastian) (see: List of parishes in the dean's office in Dornbirn ).

According to an inscription, the chapel is said to have been built in 1674 and would therefore be the oldest surviving church in Dornbirn. In 1713 "Michaeli Mohr von Heilliberg " (the family presumably comes from the Schauner) donated the bell for the chapel. According to the tax register of 1715, Michael Mohr was the richest man in the entire Hatler district at that time (Stadtbuch 1/165). The chapel was renovated in 1791, 1853 and 2001/2002.

It is a rectangular building with a southwest / northeast orientation. To the northeast (altar) the outer walls are sloping. The simple wooden door and the bell ridge on the gable roof are to the southwest. The prayer room with a flat wooden ceiling is dominated by a ceiling painting depicting the coronation of Mary (inscribed: Ig. Schwendinger, Maler, 1853, restored by F. Rösner, 1967). The altarpiece shows the Rosary Madonna with St. Wendelin and on the right St. Martin .

Figure to the left of the altar: St. Mary with child , 19th century; Pietà on the right , around the middle of the 18th century. There are 14 stations of the cross in the prayer room . Above the door there is a painting (donor picture with foundation text) depicting St. Depicts Mary with the child above purgatory , who look down to the remorseful poor souls in purgatory (inscribed "Michael Mohr v. Heilliberg 1713", builder of the chapel).

Craft, trade

Due to the traffic situation and the limited space, Schauner did not have any special craft or commercial operations. Agriculture still dominates the area today .
