Schawinski was a weekly talk show on Swiss radio and television . The moderator was Roger Schawinski , who every Monday at 10:55 p.m. on SRF 1 invited a well-known Swiss personality from politics, business or culture to an almost half-hour interview . He claimed to have led the most explosive “talk show in Switzerland”. In doing so, he also wanted to bring to light new knowledge about personalities who were decision-makers or opinion-formers in Switzerland. This in the hope that the personalities would also become easier to assess at other appearances. The program was broadcast for the first time on August 22, 2011. The first guest was the banker Konrad Hummler . In the last broadcast on March 23, 2020, Schawinski confronted three surprise guests with his spontaneous questions: Moritz Leuenberger , Katja Stauber and Urs Rohner .

Shipment concept

The interview-style conversation between Roger Schawinski and his guest was typical of the program . As guests, he also welcomed personalities with sometimes completely contrary opinions than his own.

The interview style was characterized by confrontation and strong rhythmization by the interviewer. Guests were confronted with statements, visions and actions from their past and asked about them. Abrupt changes of subject were also part of the distinctive style that characterized the show.

While his guests typically only had a single appearance on the show, some guests also sat across from Schawinski several times. Among others, Christoph Blocher , Roger Köppel , Thomas Minder , Oskar Freysinger and Christoph Mörgeli sat face -to- face a second time or more often. Blocher even made nine appearances.

Schawinski partly deviated from the principle of talking to someone opposite: on May 21, 2012 he led a discussion with three friends and companions of the late Kurt Felix , on June 11, 2012 he talked to Thomas Held and Tobias Straumann about the euro crisis , and On November 18, 2013, SP National Councilor Chantal Galladé and SVP National Councilor Thomas Aeschi held a dispute about the family initiative . Especially before important votes, Schawinski launched frequent disputes between exponents of the pro and contral camps. In the aftermath of important votes, Schawinski also held discussions with political scientists in order to analyze the outcome of the votes.

The only exception in which Schawinski did not play the role of moderator was on the occasion of the 100th broadcast. In this, Roger Schawinski asked Rundschau moderator Sandro Brotz about himself .

Announced change after scandal with Andreas Thiel

Due to the style of the program and the different reactions of the guests, individual programs were repeatedly discussed controversially. In the course of the broadcast on December 15, 2014, however, there was a scandal between Roger Schawinski and his guest Andreas Thiel . The conversation between Andreas Thiel and Roger Schawinski, who was invited because of his criticism of Islam published in Weltwoche , quickly became emotional. The two protagonists rocked each other in the course of the program, so that the course of the conversation quickly became insulting.

After the broadcast, 136 complaints were received by the SRG ombudsman within seven days, which, according to the director Achille Casanova, represents an “absolute record”. Due to the echo to this program, which has not died down even after 14 days, Schawinski is thinking out loud about becoming more picky about his guests:

“After the scandal with Thiel, I have now revised my attitude a little. That is why I will no longer bring people into the studio who systematically refuse to do anything and repurpose every program. So no more Blancho, no more Freysinger, no more the juggler and cardsharp Thiel. "

reception

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung summed up the first broadcast that it was even more of a “speed show than late night” and advised people to “slow down”. Schawinski “managed to pack topics for two days in 27 minutes in his new program”, but called it an “exciting format”. Schawinski's statement, "The expectations are so high, I can't even meet them," countered the NZZ: "If the guests agree and Schawinski concentrates on fewer topics in the future, the format of a confrontational one-on-one conversation offers an exciting change to the other offers of Swiss television. It is well chosen, for example, that the two interlocutors sit across from each other at a table - by far the best position for an interview. " Schawinski would "also not suffer from the modesty that is sometimes elevated to a Swiss virtue", which adds to the entertainment value of the show.

The premiere achieved a market share of 18.3 percent. After initially falling audience ratings , the show with Roger Köppel on January 9, 2012 set a previous record with around 260,000 viewers; the quota corresponded to a market share of 33.5 percent.

The end of the show

In September 2019, the SRF announced that the program would be canceled at the beginning or spring of 2020 for financial reasons. The last broadcast was broadcast on March 23, 2020. The talk show “Gredig direkt” with Urs Gredig followed as a follow-up broadcast .
