Schnepfenbach is a district of the town of Dettelbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .

Geographical location

Schnepfenbach is located in the north of the Dettelbach municipality. It is only surrounded by districts of Dettelbach. To the north is Neusetz , in the East Neuses am Berg , south is the district bridge in the southwest Schernau .

The next larger cities are Volkach, about 6.5 kilometers away, and Würzburg, 16 kilometers away.

In terms of nature, the northern and western districts of Dettelbach are located in the Gäufläche in the northern Maindreieck , which differs from the neighboring natural areas primarily due to its dryness.

history

Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

In contrast to many of Schnepfenbach's neighboring villages, there are no previous settlements for the village itself from prehistoric or early historical epochs. Schnepfenbach and its district were not already inhabited in pre-Christian times. It was only with the advance of the Germanic Franks in the 6th and 7th centuries that the area north of Dettelbach was administratively combined for the first time. It then took at least another century until people, probably in the 8th century, settled permanently on the site of today's Schnepfenbach.

The suffix “-bach”, which gives an indication of the location on the flowing water, is a strong indication of a Franconian settlement. The prefix "Schnepfen-" could simply refer to the natural features of the stream with the frequent occurrence of snipe birds . The place was first mentioned in documents in 1351 and always appeared in connection with the neighboring town of Brück and the central settlement of Dettelbach in the High Middle Ages .

In the 14th century, the Lords of Dettelbach acquired more rights and goods. However, the knights always remained dependent on the larger bishopric of Würzburg . In 1484, Brück and Schnepfenbach became part of the newly established Dettelbach Office. However, not the whole village was assigned to the office, the brook formed the border. All residents on the west side of the brook belonged to the Prosselsheim office , while the residents on the east side were counted as part of Dettelbach .

The Thirty Years' War caused much destruction by the changing armies. In 1631 the Protestant Swedes invaded the Catholic Schnepfenbach and mainly destroyed the population's supplies. In the same year, the city council of Dettelbach complained that “we no longer have wine , grain, or cattle, or the slightest thing.” The population suffered from the consequences of the war throughout the 17th century. The population did not slowly adjust again until the second half of the century.

Modern times

Only at the end of the 18th century did the administrative situation change for the small village. In 1792 the Prosselsheim office lost its influence over half of the village and Schnepfenbach was completely assigned to the Dettelbach office. A few years later the Würzburg monastery was secularized and Schnepfenbach came, after an interim period in the Grand Duchy of Würzburg , to the Dettelbach Regional Court in the Kingdom of Bavaria. The 19th century was characterized by a rapidly growing population, in 1802 109 people lived in the village, in 1831 there were already 176 inhabitants.

In 1862 the church is said to have been built in the village by the foundation of Mrs. Gertrud Friedrich from Prosselsheim . The exact background of this story is unclear. What is certain is that the church consecrated to St. Kilian was designated on June 9, 1862. Before that, a linden tree in the village had been used for worship gatherings. Ten years later, in 1872, a cemetery was built in the village and in 1874 a volunteer fire brigade was founded in Schnepfenbach.

In 1907 the first street lamp was erected in Schnepfenbach, and in 1911 the thoroughfares were given their own street names. From 1963, land consolidation began in Schnepfenbach , six years later the elementary school in Schnepfenbach was closed and the village joined the Dettelbach school association. On May 1, 1978 Schnepfenbach was incorporated into the city of Dettelbach as a district.

The Kilian's Church in Schnepfenbach

The St. Kilian branch church in the middle of the village was built in the neo-Romanesque style by a foundation in the late 19th century. The oldest piece of equipment is the bell from 1508 in the roof turret of the little church, which originally hung in the community's linden tree. In addition, objects that came into the church in the second half of the 20th century predominate.

Two stone crosses next to the church go back to an argument in which two wagoners killed each other. Originally both crosses stood next to a wayside shrine that no longer exists.
