Location of the Shtuschtschja (Щу́чья) in the catchment area of the Ob |
The Shchuchya ( Russian Щу́чья , Nenets Пыряяха / Pyrjajacha ) is a 565 km long left tributary of the Ob , across the Arctic Circle in northwestern Siberia ( Russia ).
course
The Shchuchya flows on the eastern flank of the Polar Urals at the southeastern end of the Great Shchuchye Lake (Bolshoye Shchuchye), about 130 kilometers as the crow flies north of Labytnangi and 100 kilometers northeast of Vorkuta . The lake is a 13 km long, 1 km wide and about 150 meters deep fjord lake , above whose water level at 185 m above sea level the mountains rise steeply to over 1200 m on both sides . Both the name of the lake and that of the river are derived from the Russian word "shchuka" for " pike ", which means, like the Nenets name, " pike lake" and " pike river".
The Shchuchya initially flows several dozen kilometers through the flatter mountains in an easterly direction. On this section until reaching the plain, the river Bolshaya Shchuchya ("Great Shchuchya") is called; the Malaya Shchuchya ("Little Shchuchya") flows a few kilometers below the lake from the right. At the mountain edge from which the Yamal Peninsula extends to the northeast, the river turns in south to south-east directions. It flows strongly meandering through the mostly flat, swampy and lake-rich tundra landscape . In a large arc to the north, the Shchuchya flows around the ridge of Bolshoi Sopkei ("Great Sopkei") and then back to the south at its eastern foot.
In the lower reaches the river branches into several large and numerous small arms. The right of the great arms is further called Shchuchya (Pyrjajacha); it finally flows into the left arm of the Ob, the Little Ob (Malaja Ob) , almost 100 kilometers east of Labytnangi , which, despite its name, is up to one kilometer wide, and at the mouth of the Shchuchya through the island of Tobolko, it is two more Arms is divided. The left of the large arms, Jamburinskaja , flows almost 20 kilometers downhill not far from the eponymous village of Jambura into the reunited Ob, which is about 3.5 kilometers wide. The two great arms of the Shchuchya are about 200 meters wide at the mouth and up to four meters deep; the flow velocity is 0.2 m / s.
The most important tributaries of the Shchuchya are Bolshaya Chadyta ("Great Chadyta") and Bolshaya Charuta ("Great Charuta") from the right and Junjacha, Chejacha, Tarsedajacha and Tanlowajacha from the left.
Hydrology
The catchment area of the Shchuchya covers 12,300 km². It freezes over from October to the end of May / beginning of June, and from the end of February to April to the bottom. When the snow melts in June, a flood that lasts until September begins. The mean flow rate (MQ) at Shchuchye, 141 kilometers above the mouth, is 104 m / s³, with a minimum of 0.9 m / s³ in April and a maximum of 486 m / s³ in June.
fauna
The Shchuchya is the spawning area for various salmon fish of the genus Coregonus , including great vendace ( C. nasus , Russian Tschir ), small vendace ( C. albula , Russian Ryapuschka ) and others (Russian Sig or “Belaja ryba”, “white fish”).
Economy and Infrastructure
The lower reaches of the Shchuchya with its right and left estuary are navigable; 22 km of the right arm from Belojarsk are marked as an inland waterway .
The area through which the Shchuchya flows is sparsely populated. Only the small towns of Laborovaya, Shchuchye and Belojarsk, which belong to the Priuralsky Raion of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, are located on the river , the territory of which it flows through along its entire length. As part of the initial development of the Yamal oil and gas deposits by Gazprom , the Obskaya – Karskaya railway line is about to be completed, construction of which began in the 1980s. Like the road that runs parallel on this section, it crosses the Shchuchya south of Laborovaya. Other infrastructure is missing.
In particular, the upper reaches of the river with the Great Shchuchye Lake is a popular trekking destination because of its relatively good accessibility by Siberian standards .
