The black-rimmed yarrow or black yarrow ( Achillea atrata ) is a species of yarrow ( Achillea ).

The names of the species, which are often only used regionally, exist or existed: Edelraute ( Pongau , Pinzgau ), Schwarze Gabüse ( Bernese Oberland ), Wilder Grahl ( Fusch im Pinzgau), Schwarze Garbe (Berner Oberland), Genepi , Genipi , Grüner Raut ( Zillertal ), Reifern ( Wallis ), Unser Frauen schwarz Rauch ( Hungary ).

The hardly fragrant, perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of growth of 5 to 25 centimeters and has a simple, upright stem. Stems and wicker stems are hairy, closely spaced. The basal leaves, which are elongated in outline, are petiolate and deeply pinnately fissured with usually three to five-column lobes. The upper leaves are sessile.

The flower heads are arranged in a terminal umbrella cluster , the tubular flowers being pale yellow and the ray flowers being white. The baskets reach a diameter of 11 to 16 millimeters. The bracts are green with a wide black skin border.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The black-rimmed yarrow is widespread in the Alps from Savoy and Piedmont in the west to Lower Austria , Styria and Carniola in the east. It occurs in France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Slovenia.

Lime-rich, moist soils, rock and rubble corridors are preferred as the location. The black-rimmed yarrow is a species of character of the order Thlaspietalia rotundifolii. This species inhabits altitudes of 1300 to 3000  m , on the Finsteraarhorn in Switzerland even up to almost 4300 m. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises from 1300 meters to an altitude of 2500 meters.

Synonyms of Achillea atrata L. are Achillea halleri Crantz and Achillea atrata subsp. halleri (Crantz) P. Fourn.
