The black man at Buchet- Halenfeld in the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm is 697.8  m above sea level. NHN for a nearby peaks at 699.1  m height, the second highest elevation of the Schneifel .

The Schnee-Eifel transmitter is located near the summit . The area is a well-developed hiking area and the largest winter sports area in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Origin of name

The name Black Man has nothing to do with the horror child The Black Man , but with the black faces of the miners mining lead ore in the Bleialf mine . The summit used to be called "Kerschgeroth", which is probably derived from the clearing of the heavily forested area.

geography

location

The Black Man rises in the west of the Eifel in the Schnee Eifel , near the border with Belgium and in the Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park . The mountain peak is around 3 km east of Halenfeld (district of Buchet), 3.8 km west-northwest of Wascheid (district of Gondenbrett ) and 3.3 km (as the crow flies ) north of Sellerich ; the border between the municipalities of Buchet and Sellerich runs over the summit. Nearby are the town of Prüm in the south-east and the communities of Bleialf in the west-south-west and Ormont in the north-east. The Alfbach rises on the northern slope of the mountain , the Litzenmehlenbach on the eastern slope and the Mönbach on the southern slope .

The Tranchotstein is located near the summit . The small boundary stone was named after the French geographer Jean Joseph Tranchot (1752-1815), who carried out the topographical survey of the Rhineland (Tranchot map) on behalf of Napoleon Bonaparte .

Natural allocation and protected area

The black man belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Westeifel (No. 28) and in the main unit Westliche Hocheifel (281) to the subunit Schneifelücken (281.0).

Parts of the Schneifel fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH no. 5704-301; 36.65  km² ) are located on the Black Man .

Mountain height and summit

Almost 1.5 km (as the crow flies) northeast of the summit ( 697.8  m ) of the Schwarzen Mann is about 150 m north-northeast of the blockhouse restaurant Zum Schwarzen Mann ( ) as the highest peak in the Schneifel and third highest in the Eifel, an unnamed place with 699, 1  m ( ) height.

Flora and fauna

Both the Schneifel and the Schwarze Mann are predominantly overgrown with spruce trees. There are still rare plant and animal species such as the wildcat .

Sender Schnee-Eifel

The tower of the Schnee-Eifel transmitter , which can be seen from afar, is located about 250 m south-southwest of the mountain peak . It was built in 1965 at an altitude of about 690  m and is closed to the public. When analog TV broadcasting ( ZDF and SWR Fernsehen Rheinland-Pfalz ) was discontinued, the tower was shortened from 223 m to 105 m in 2010 to 2011, as the previous height is no longer required for broadcasting ( Deutschlandfunk ).

Winter sports area

The Schwarzer Mann winter sports area is located on the Black Man . About 1.3 km (as the crow flies) northeast of its summit are the top stations of two tow lifts at the Zum Schwarzen Mann blockhouse restaurant . There are two 800 m long ski slopes , a toboggan run (450 m) with a lift and a children's toboggan run. If snow conditions and weather permit, two cross-country trails (12 and 18 km) are usually groomed through the varied landscape in January and February and cleared in winter via a 5 km long hiking trail .

Traffic and walking

The state road  20 runs over the mountain summit of the Schwarzen Mann , which crosses the federal road 265 in the north-east and leads beyond the summit to the south-west to Brandscheid . Parking is available near the summit and near the Zum Schwarzen Mann blockhouse restaurant . The landscape can be hiked through on several forest trails and paths, such as the Schneifelhöhenweg leading over the summit .
