Final round
In the previous year, the top 32 in the world rankings entered the first round of the main tournament as a single group and played against 32 qualifiers. This time there were only 16 qualifiers who played against the bottom half of the top players. The top 16 were set for the second round.
Round 1
16 players had qualified in four rounds. They competed against the players from 17th to 32nd place in the world rankings.
Top 32 to the finalThe top 16 of the world rankings were set for round 2 and played against the 16 winners from round 1. finalIt had been a successful season for both players, Peter Ebdon had won the British Open , Ken Doherty had even been victorious twice, at the Welsh Open and the Thailand Masters . But it was already 6 years ago that both had met in a final. Ebdon had won this one, as well as the only other one before it. This time Doherty made the first frame before Ebdon pulled away to 3-1 and 4-2. But it remained the highest lead, because the Irish equalized to 4: 4 at the end of the session. In the evening session, every lead was immediately equalized up to a score of 7: 7. Ebdon stole the 15th frame by one point despite a 52-point break from Doherty. Now the Irishman should have won the next frame, but it was Ebdon who made it 9: 7. For him it was the 8th title in as many years on the professional tour.
Century breaks13 players scored 16 breaks of at least 100 points in the main tournament. John Higgins was not only the only one to be successful three times, he also scored the highest century break of the tournament in the round of 16 . The break of 141 points earned him an additional £ 5,000 as a bonus. Main tournament
