This Joe Deebs crime thriller is a story with humorous undertones. Henry de Smet, a friend of the detective, receives a visit from his father-in-law, Sebastian Straaten, who is relocating his umbrella during this visit. Then the old man almost panics because the good piece seems dear to him. Deebs turns on and finds the umbrella. A little later, the nose is drawn into a case around Straaten. Because he dies suddenly and, although he was considered very wealthy, leaves behind no money, but only a highly indebted house in which he lived. Deebs had the brilliant idea of ​​looking in the umbrella, which was so important for Straaten, and in fact: he found a deposit there that was worth a large sum (250,000).

His best friend was shot in the second half of 1917, passed film censorship in January 1918 and premiered on February 15, 1918 in the Tauentzienpalast in Berlin . The film had four acts over a length of 1,264 meters. A youth ban was issued.

For the cameraman Curt Courant , who was just 18 years old , this was one of his first works. Producer Joe May , from whom director Uwe Jens Krafft had learned, took over the artistic direction of the director.
